Hello everyone, I have a specific question regarding the sustainable care of my Malm furniture from Ikea. I notice that these pieces are very common in many households and are often chosen because of their simple design. However, I am wondering how to treat this type of furniture, which mainly consists of particleboard with a veneer or laminate finish, in a gentler and especially more sustainable way to extend its lifespan and avoid harmful cleaning agents. Does anyone have concrete recommendations for sustainable approaches, whether for cleaning, scratch protection, or general maintenance? I am particularly interested in natural or eco-friendly products and mechanical care methods. Thank you in advance!

Hey, good approach here! 😊 Malm furniture is really everywhere, and unfortunately it doesn’t maintain itself. For sustainable care, you can use a mild homemade cleaning spray made from water and a few drops of vinegar or lemon juice – it helps remove dirt without damaging the surface.

Also important: use a damp cloth to avoid damaging the laminate. You can treat scratches with furniture wax pastes made from beeswax, which are natural and protect the surface. This way, the furniture stays looking good longer and you’re doing something positive for the environment. 😉

If you have any questions about the recipes, feel free to ask!

For the sustainable care of Malm furniture, it is recommended to use environmentally friendly, pH-neutral or slightly acidic cleaners that do not contain aggressive solvents or microplastics. A damp cloth without strong chemicals is often sufficient.

Oiling products, which are suitable for solid wood, are not recommended for plastic veneers like those on Malm, as they can dissolve the surface or cause unsightly stains.

Simple felt pads under objects and avoiding sharp cleaning tools help protect against scratches. Regular inspection and avoiding excessive moisture are essential.

Hello and thanks for the interesting topic! I have been caring for my Malm dressers in a similar way for years and can offer the following tips:

1. Gentle cleaning: A soft microfiber cloth with warm water is often sufficient.
2. I treat stains with diluted chestnut or Castile soap concentrate, which is sustainable and biodegradable.
3. Avoid abrasive sponges – the laminate could come off.
4. To protect against minor scratches, I use felt pads on the drawers and am careful with sharp objects.

Hope this helps!

Short and to the point: Avoid harsh cleaning agents and use only damp cloths. Scratches can be concealed with furniture markers. Do not use oils or waxes, as they will damage the film.

Thanks in advance for the information provided so far, especially the tip from letar that oil-based products tend to have a negative effect on the surface of the foil—it’s very helpful.

I am also interested in how you handle more severe wear and tear. For example, if the edges of furniture pieces are already a bit worn, are there any repair tips that are sustainable? Or are there other measures known that could counteract material fatigue without having to buy new furniture?
