Bernhardke29 Dec 2015 08:37Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of understanding and following the instructions for the Ikea Brimnes furniture piece. In my opinion, the illustrations are quite minimalistic, and I find that there is a lack of clarity, which is especially important during the assembly steps. My question is: What strategies or methods would you recommend to better understand the Ikea Brimnes instructions and apply them more efficiently in practice? Are there any particular approaches I should follow or tools that other users have found helpful?
I can well understand how frustrating it can be when instructions are not intuitive. I had a similar experience with IKEA furniture, including the Brimnes series. What helped me was unpacking everything in advance and closely examining each part. Then I carefully read through each section of the instructions and tried to mentally follow the steps before starting to screw anything together. An important detail: take your time and don’t rush – often the mistake comes from quickly skimming over a step. If possible, pay close attention to the measurements along the way, as this can help you better understand how the parts fit together. How are you managing with the instructions so far, and which sections are particularly unclear to you?

I’m still uncertain whether I need to measure every dimension exactly or if a rough understanding is sufficient to assemble the components correctly. Do you consider taking precise measurements that important if you’re not working to the millimeter?
A clear and structured approach significantly reduces errors. Regarding measurements: with IKEA furniture, especially Brimnes, taking accurate measurements is crucial, even when the parts are precisely cut. This prevents assembling the wrong pieces together.
I recommend:
- Use a tape measure or a folding ruler to verify the dimensions given in the instructions.
- Label screws or parts with small stickers if it is hard to distinguish them visually.
- Always follow the order of the instructions to avoid confusion.
Additionally, it is helpful to spread out the assembly manual on a table and arrange all screws sorted by type. This provides a clear overview and simplifies the building process.

I think the Brimnes instructions have their own unique charm – minimalist to the extreme. 🙃 My tip: Imagine you’re Sherlock Holmes and have to piece together the story of the furniture from all those small images!
Seriously though, sometimes I just took a sheet of paper, made my own little sketches, and marked which screw goes where. Sounds nerdy, but it really helps! Plus, it makes it much easier to check the parts next time.

From experience, I can add that it also helps to go through the individual steps together with a second person. This way, you can check each other and often gain a better overall understanding.
Sometimes instructions are read differently than intended, which can lead to unclear interpretations. The best approach is:
- Proceed step by step
- Before starting a new step, check the previous parts and screws
- And very importantly: always check the back side of the instructions for details. Sometimes you’ll find additional tips there that aren’t included in the main section.
Since you have already looked through the instructions partially, I consider getting a second opinion during assembly to be a very helpful approach.
