Hello everyone,

I am planning to move soon and own some Malm furniture from Ikea that I want to transport safely. My question is: How can I better secure Malm furniture during a move to prevent scratches and avoid compromising its stability? Specifically, I am interested in proven methods, packaging materials, and procedures that both protect the furniture and make the transport easier. Additionally, I am concerned about any drawers and the smooth surface that can scratch easily. I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Drawers can also be secured during transport if they are not removed, for example with duct tape or Velcro straps, but separate packaging is usually safer.

That’s good to know. I decided against removing them because I want to handle the furniture more easily. Are there specific Velcro solutions that can be removed cleanly without leaving residue? And what is the best way to secure the furniture if the drawers stay inside? Maybe a tip for fixing them inside a truck would be helpful?

For drawers that are not meant to be removed, hook-and-loop tape with adhesive backing is a good solution, but make sure to choose high-quality tape to avoid leaving residue.

Alternatively, wide stretch bands that wrap around the furniture can prevent drawers from opening by applying tension.

In the moving vehicle, furniture should always be secured with multiple ratchet straps, both at the top and bottom, to prevent any movement. Non-slip mats under the furniture are also ideal.

Protect all corners with foam profiles and use moving blankets to prevent direct pressure points.

If possible, avoid stacking too many pieces of furniture horizontally to prevent pressure damage.

I’m quite familiar with moving Malm furniture, and honestly, I was pretty nervous about damage during my last move.

After reading all the tips here, I can only say: feeling anxious is normal, but with good preparation, it usually goes really well. Back then, I removed all the drawers and packed them carefully, but even if someone leaves the drawers in, the furniture still needs to be well padded overall.

I would recommend not rushing anything and definitely not cutting corners when securing the furniture. That also saves a lot of stress 🙂 How is the rest of the move going? Do you have help, or are you packing on your own?

Thank you for the encouraging words! It’s actually a small move we are doing ourselves with two helpers. I have now gathered a set of furniture blankets, stretch wrap, and edge protectors. I have decided to remove the drawers after all, since it will be easier to distribute the padding with the helpers. Thanks to all of you for the great tips, very helpful!
