Hello everyone, I will be moving soon and have some Ikea Malm furniture that I definitely want to transport without any damage. Since these pieces are often made of coated particleboard, I’m concerned about scratches, dents, and possible warping caused by improper packing or stacking.

My question to the community: How can I best protect my MALM furniture during a move? What materials or methods do you recommend to prevent both surface scratches and structural damage? Are there any special tips for securing particularly sensitive parts, such as fronts or drawer slides?

I look forward to your advice and experiences!

I find it really helpful to wrap blankets with stretch film as well. This keeps everything securely together, and if something shifts during transport, it doesn’t cause much damage. 😉

Even better: pack drawers or doors separately beforehand—there’s nothing more frustrating than a torn front!

I wrapped the furniture with blankets and stretch film.

That’s exactly how I always do it too; it combines protection with easy handling.

In short: disassemble furniture, protect edges, cover surfaces with blankets and plastic sheeting, remove drawers. Done.

In addition to the previous tips, it also helps to secure boxes or padding so that they do not shift during transport. Furthermore, careful handling often results in less damage compared to quick stacking.

I recommend carefully applying an additional protective layer with painter’s tape on sensitive areas such as the Malm fronts. This helps prevent scratches caused by friction with plastic sheeting or other materials.

Very good tip! I recommend sticking the tape only to the edges, not over the entire surface, to avoid any adhesive residue.

Also, you should pack the furniture while it is dry, as moisture can damage the finish. Good luck with your move! 🙂
