Hello everyone,

I have some IKEA Malm furniture, mainly dressers and nightstands, that I would like to better protect against impacts. Since this furniture is relatively soft and especially the edges and corners are very prone to scratches or dents, I am looking for practical and effective ways to minimize damage in everyday situations.

It is important to me that the protective measures are not too expensive, don’t interfere too much with the appearance, and are as easy to install as possible, since I’m not very handy. At the same time, the solution should be durable and not leave any residue on the furniture.

Has anyone had experience with how to better protect Malm furniture from typical impacts? For example, with special padding, mounting protective strips, or maybe even sealing? What works well and what doesn’t?

Thanks for your tips and advice!

I would recommend flexible silicone edge profiles. They are easy to install and protect against impacts. Additionally, you can place small felt pads under the furniture to reduce direct impact from items placed on surfaces.

I understand your concern, especially with Malm furniture, the finish tends to wear off quickly, which is really annoying. I experienced the same and used foam corner protectors from the hardware store – that really helped, especially with children in the house. The material is soft, so it cushions impacts well, even though it’s not the most stylish solution. It’s a compromise between protection and appearance.

To improve the impact resistance of IKEA Malm furniture, I recommend using clear polyurethane varnishes specifically designed for furniture surfaces. These varnishes noticeably increase scratch and impact resistance. Before application, the surface should be lightly sanded and cleaned. Alternatively, there are self-adhesive transparent protective films specially made for edges. These films are durable, long-lasting, and leave little residue after removal.

Another option is rubber or plastic corner protectors that slip over the corners, protecting the areas most prone to impacts. Installation is usually straightforward and reversible.

I have had good experiences with felt and rubber applications on the corners. They are inexpensive and quick to install.

In general, it is advisable to reconsider the room layout before applying mechanical protective measures. Malm furniture has a smooth, relatively delicate surface. I recommend positioning the furniture slightly away from walls or other pieces to widen passageways and reduce the risk of bumps.

For physical protection, the following options work best:

1. Transparent adhesive films specifically designed for furniture edges – nearly invisible and protect against minor impacts
2. Flexible protective profiles made of silicone or rubber that cover corners and absorb shocks when bumped
3. Felt pads on furniture legs to protect surfaces when moving the furniture

It is important that the protective materials are compatible with painted surfaces to prevent discoloration or adhesive residues.

Overall, keep in mind that Malm is not an extremely durable furniture series. Adding a glass or wooden panel on the surface can also serve as impact and scratch protection.
