ᐅ How can I better adapt BILLY shelves to fit my wall?

Hello everyone,

I have a question about better fitting Billy shelves to my wall. The wall isn’t perfectly straight, and when assembling the shelves, small gaps or uneven areas appear that disrupt the overall look. Additionally, I want to securely fix the shelves without causing major damage to the wall.

What options are there to install BILLY shelves precisely on uneven walls? Are there specific materials or mounting systems that have proven effective? Any tips to prevent wobbling or creaking would also be great. I have considered adjusting the shelves and adding spacer strips, but maybe there are better, more professional solutions?

Thanks in advance for your experiences and ideas!

That’s a great question! I attached my Billy shelves to the wall using small, thin foam strips behind the shelf frames – it really made a big difference! No more wobbling, and the wall looks great.

Also, I love adjustable leveling feet; they keep the shelves perfectly straight. It makes everything look much more professional and stable, while still easy with a DIY vibe 🙂 Good luck!

Always install wall brackets with elongated holes, as this allows for fine adjustment of the position. Check the floor beforehand, as uneven floors are often the cause of wobbling. Align the adjustable feet separately.

A precise procedure:

1. Measure and document any unevenness in the wall.
2. Adjust suitable spacer strips at critical points (wood, plastic, or specialized furniture foam).
3. Use elongated slot brackets with enough clearance to align the shelves during installation.
4. Use adjustable leveling feet to compensate for uneven floors.
5. Make sure all fastening points are securely screwed in to prevent wobbling.

This method is technically proven and results in stable BILLY shelving units.

That sounds very helpful and well-structured, thank you!

Are there any experiences regarding the use of special flexible mounting adhesives with BILLY shelves to achieve better adhesion on uneven walls without using many screws? Or is this not recommended due to the material properties of the shelves?

In general, mounting adhesive is better recommended as a supplementary solution rather than the main fastening method. For BILLY shelves made from wood-based panels, adhesive can bond well, but a durable and load-bearing fixation is only achieved with mechanical fasteners such as screws and wall brackets.

When choosing adhesive, look for an elastic type that can absorb movement. Avoid hard-drying adhesives to reduce stress. Also, adhesives should be removable later without leaving residue, in case you need to uninstall the shelves.

My advice: use adhesive in combination with spacers and screws to improve stability without risk.

Totally agree! That’s exactly how I did it – the combination makes all the difference. The shelf is very stable, and there’s no creaking or cracking anymore. Just give it a try! 🙂
