Hello everyone, I have an Ikea Besta shelf unit in my living room and have noticed that it gets dusty quite quickly. Since I find the material and surface relatively delicate, I’m wondering: What is the best way to protect my Ikea BESTA from dust without having to clean it constantly or damaging the furniture? Are there special covers, materials, or perhaps tips on how to properly care for the unit so that dust doesn’t stick so easily? I would be very grateful for any helpful suggestions!

I think the discussion is a bit exaggerated: dust is simply a natural part of our living environment. Perhaps the first question should be whether it really makes sense to want furniture completely "dust-free" or if that is more of an illusion.

However, if protection is truly the goal, then some kind of cover or dust-proof casing is the technically easiest solution. Of course, this comes at the expense of aesthetics.

A provocative idea: one could also rely on regular ventilation and air filters instead of sealing furniture hermetically. In the end, it would definitely be interesting to hear what methods you have tried or if there are materials that attract less dust.

When dust becomes quickly visible, a simple combination can help:
- A microfiber or dust cloth for quick wiping
- Furniture polish with anti-static properties to reduce dust adhesion
- If possible, close the doors on the BESTA cabinet to prevent dust from entering

These are practical, proven methods.

There are several factors to consider when trying to best protect an Ikea BESTA unit from dust:

- Material and surface: The best approach depends largely on whether your BESTA cabinet has a matte or glossy finish. Glossy surfaces usually attract less dust but are more prone to showing fingerprints.

- Doors and closures: BESTA units with closed doors are the most effective at keeping dust out. Open shelves naturally collect significantly more dust. If you don’t have doors, you might consider adding hinged or sliding doors, which are often compatible within the Ikea range.

- Surface protection:
- Using high-quality furniture care products (e.g., wax or specialized polish) can impregnate the surface, making it harder for dust to adhere.
- There are also anti-static sprays that repel dust, but these should be tested carefully to avoid damaging the finish.

- Covers:
- Dust covers or custom-fitted protective covers are an option, but they are only practical if you don’t use the shelving regularly.

- Indoor climate:
- Humidifiers and regular ventilation can help reduce the amount of dust.
- Air filters in the room can continuously reduce fine particles.

- Regular cleaning:
- Using a vacuum cleaner with a furniture brush makes it easy to remove dust.

I’m curious: Do you use your BESTA frequently in day-to-day life? If so, covers are rather impractical. In that case, surface treatment or closing the doors makes more sense.

One small tip: Dust tends to accumulate in corners and hard-to-reach areas. If you optimize these spots, you’ll already significantly reduce the dust build-up.
