Songe59Hello everyone,
I am facing the challenge of mounting my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets on an old plank floor. My concern is not only the stability of the cabinets but also protecting the floor from damage and ensuring that the mounting can be removed later without leaving marks.
I have considered using standard plugs and screws but worry that they might cause long-term damage to the plank floor. Are there any special methods or mounting systems that work particularly well on this type of subfloor?
Perhaps someone has had similar experiences or knows effective solutions for securing Metod cabinets safely and gently on plank floors. I would appreciate any detailed suggestions or descriptions of practical steps!

Hello Songe59,
First of all, it is very important to know the exact condition of the wooden plank floor because depending on the wood type, age, and how the planks are fixed (nailed, screwed, glued), the floor can be either very delicate or relatively sturdy.
For fixing IKEA Metod cabinets onto wooden plank floors, I have found the following approach to be practical and at the same time gentle on the floor:
- Use special floor leveling profiles under the cabinets to avoid pressure marks on the planks.
- Do not fix the cabinets directly to the floor; instead, work with adjustable cabinet feet. This way, the pressure is applied only at the feet, which can be adjusted as needed.
- To secure against tipping or slipping: screw into the wall (not into the wooden floor!). IKEA Metod cabinets can be connected to the wall at the upper area with small angle brackets. This allows solid stabilization without screwing into the planks.
However, if the floor is sealed and very sturdy, it is possible to work with special wooden dowels and small diameter wood drill bits. In any case, always test beforehand how the floor reacts.
Could you also provide information on how your planks are fixed and whether you want to secure the cabinets only against slipping or if they should be permanently fixed?
This will help to give more precise advice.

For mounting Metod cabinets on wooden plank floors, I recommend leveling the cabinets using the adjustable feet to compensate for any unevenness. Directly fixing the cabinets to the floor is usually not necessary and can damage the planks.
Make sure to additionally secure the cabinets to the wall, preferably with brackets or special Metod wall mounts, to ensure safety and stability.
If a fixed floor attachment is absolutely necessary, use special screws with rubber buffers as dampers to avoid placing excessive stress on the wooden planks.

Could you also share how your floorboards are fixed and whether you want to secure the cabinets only against sliding or if they should be permanently fixed? This is a very important question, as the condition and fastening of the floorboards really make the difference here. I also have floorboards and thought a lot about this because I didn’t want to risk damaging their condition.
In the end, I chose a reversible solution that respects the material: Metod cabinets with sturdy plinth feet, secured to the wall, and felt pads underneath as anti-slip protection. This way, I can easily move the cabinets if needed without leaving marks.
I completely understand that you want the cabinets to be stable but don’t want to damage the floorboards — this is a challenge I also had to face.
