Vittorio4830 Jan 2022 09:37Hello everyone, I am currently planning to assemble my new IKEA PLATSA wardrobe but want to avoid drilling since I live in a rental apartment and donât want to damage the walls.
My question is: What options are there to complete the PLATSA assembly entirely without drilling â that is, especially without wall plugs or other wall fasteners that create holes in the wall?
I am open to alternative stabilization methods, secure standing solutions, or even special adhesive systems that can reliably fix the wardrobe without damaging the wall. It is important to me that the construction is stable enough to ensure the wardrobe stands securely and does not lean or fall over, especially when opening cabinet elements or storing heavy items inside.
Has anyone perhaps done this before or knows of workable solutions? Tips specifically for the PLATSA system would be ideal, as I am not keen on the standard solution involving drilling and wall plugs. Thanks in advance!

You could try using the PLATSA modules simply as a freestanding shelving unit leaned against a wall. Alternatively, angle brackets can be used to connect multiple modules more securely on top of each other. For a secure hold without drilling, special furniture anchors with adhesive strips are also an option; these provide some stability but are not as strong as wall plugs (anchors).
Hello Vittorio48,
first of all, just to be sure: the PLATSA is indeed designed to be fixed to the wall to prevent tipping. This is especially important for taller units or when opening cabinet doors. However, there are alternatives if you want to avoid drilling.
Here are some tips to make the assembly stable:
- Place the units on sturdy external feet or bases (sometimes suitable baseboards are available) for a secure foundation.
- Connect the units to each other using strong metal brackets so that multiple units form a stable joined system.
- Use strong double-sided carpet tape or special mounting adhesive pads that can carry heavy loads. Make sure the wall surface is suitable (smooth, dust-free areas).
- Alternatively, tension systems that lock the cabinet between floor and ceiling (such as tension rods) can provide safety.
An important note: avoid cheap adhesives for wall mounting, as they may pose a fire hazard or risk of falling when under load. Stability is the top priority.
If possible, also check whether your landlord allows drilling in certain areas â sometimes exceptions apply.
I hope this helps you!

Additional Information:
The IKEA PLATSA system is designed to be securely anchored to the wall. Avoiding drilling increases the risk of the cabinet tipping over, especially with taller units or uneven loading.
Please consider the following points:
- Wall mounting serves as protection against tipping. Without it, the units may become unstable.
- Tension rods from floor to ceiling can help avoid drilling but must be carefully installed and fixed on non-slip surfaces.
- It is especially important to store heavy items as low as possible to lower the center of gravity.
- Some users report using adhesive systems with very strong tapes; however, these are generally suitable only for temporary use and may fail under load.
Conclusion: It is possible to install without drilling, but there is always some safety risk involved. Professional advice and on-site inspection of the materials used are highly recommended.

I would like to offer an alternative method in the form of a short guide that I used for assembling my PLATSA without drilling:
1. Measure the room and arrange the modules so that they sit snugly against the wall.
2. Equip the floor with non-slip pads to prevent the furniture from sliding.
3. Secure the modules to each other using the included connectors and corner brackets to create a stable unit.
4. Use furniture-specific tension rods installed between the floor and ceiling to significantly reduce the risk of tipping.
5. For additional fixation, use suitable adhesive power strips designed for furniture (not for walls, but for securing furniture to furniture).
Important:
- Measure the ceiling height accurately beforehand and choose tension systems accordingly.
- It is better to connect more modules together to increase stability.
This way, I was able to avoid drilling while still creating a solid and safe construction. Hope this helps!
