Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble an IKEA Malm dresser at home and want to make sure it is child-safe. I am especially interested in how to secure the furniture so that it cannot tip over and so my children won’t get injured while playing or climbing on it. Are there any reliable installation methods, special fasteners, or accessories you would recommend? Additionally, I would like to know if it makes sense to install safety locks on all the drawers or if there are other risks I should be aware of. I look forward to any concrete tips or personal experiences on how you have made your Malm furniture child-safe.

Wall mounting and drawer locks are mandatory for Malm. Adding more locks does not necessarily make the furniture safer and can be easily bypassed by active children. It is better to focus on secure installation and education.

One additional idea: If the dresser is placed on carpet, there could still be a risk of slipping. In this case, adding a non-slip mat under the furniture can provide extra stability and keep it securely in place. This does not replace the standard tip-over protection but rather supplements it.

Wouldn't it make sense to add weight to the underside of the furniture?

Adding weight rarely helps much and makes the furniture harder to move. It’s better to secure it properly right away; that is completely sufficient.

In summary, the key points are:
- Wall mounting with appropriate tip-over protection
- Use of drawer locks, depending on the child’s age
- Corner protectors on sharp edges
- Preventing free access to heavy or unstable parts
- Regular maintenance and inspection of fastenings
These recommendations are based on accident prevention standards and many parental experiences. Complete safety cannot be guaranteed, but these measures significantly reduce the risk.
