Hello everyone, I recently tried assembling Ikea Malm drawers myself, but putting them together and especially inserting the drawers is quite awkward and time-consuming. My main question is: Are there any tips or tricks to make assembling Malm drawers easier and, above all, to insert them more smoothly without compromising fit or stability? Perhaps someone knows of specific tools, steps, or sequences that can make the process more efficient. It would also be helpful to get advice on how to avoid common pitfalls, as I found positioning the slides and adjusting the drawers somewhat challenging. Thanks in advance for your support!

A simple and often underestimated method to make assembling Malm drawers easier is to first organize and check all parts carefully before assembly. In particular, the runners and metal slides need to be correctly aligned, as even a slight misalignment can complicate the installation later on. One tip is to loosely fasten the slides first and then check if the drawer moves smoothly in and out before tightening the screws completely.

Additionally, I recommend paying attention to a slight tilt when inserting the drawers: lift the front of the drawer slightly while sliding it into the runners. This makes it easier to set them onto the guide rails.

Avoid forcing the drawer in or pulling it hard, as this can damage the plastic guides and affect the fit.

For tools, screwdrivers with thinner handles help reach the tight areas behind the side panels. A small wooden block can also be useful to align the drawer during assembly.

I can only agree and would like to add a few basic tips that might also help people who don’t have much experience with furniture assembly.

First of all: Take your time to carefully read the instructions step by step. Although IKEA instructions are often minimalistic, following the sequence usually saves a lot of frustration. For the Malm drawers, it is important to install the drawer runners at the exact height, otherwise they may stick or be too loose.

This is really invaluable! A little fine-tuning can prevent a lot of trouble. I have also found it helpful to fully assemble the drawer first and then carefully insert it. If possible, it is a good idea to get assistance when inserting it.

There are also small aids like plastic glides or foam pads that you can attach to the sides of the drawer to help it slide more smoothly.

Finally: Always remember not to overtighten the screws, or the drawer will not slide properly.

I can only say: Don’t panic, the Malm drawers aren’t rocket science—you just need to stay calm and work systematically. 🙂

Here’s a little tip from me: When you install the drawer slides, first lay them out on a clean, flat surface and check all the holes and edges. Sometimes there are small films or protective strips that are easy to overlook and need to be removed.

I’ve also learned that you shouldn’t assemble the individual components too early. Especially the side panels with the guide rails work better if the screws are only hand-tightened at first, before fully tightening everything. If it gets stuck, gently rubbing the plastic guides with a bit of silicone grease often helps—caution: use very sparingly! This makes sliding much easier and protects the mechanism in the long run.

That’s a great addition! I always find it amazing how small details can make a task much easier. Good luck with the assembly! 😉
