Hello everyone,
I have an IKEA MALM dresser with several drawers, and I’m having issues with the drawers not always aligning properly. Especially with frequent use, they can sometimes become crooked or not sit flush within the opening, which looks unattractive and makes operation more difficult.
My question is: How can I ensure MALM drawers are consistently and reliably well aligned? Are there any special techniques, adjustment tips, or tools that work particularly well for this? Any advice on potential mistakes during assembly or installation of the drawers would also be helpful.
I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences or tips on the best ways to tackle this problem.

Hello Sulejman,
The key to aligning MALM drawers correctly starts with proper installation of the drawer runners. The rails must be mounted perfectly parallel on the side walls of the dresser. Even slight deviations can cause the drawer not to sit flush.
You should also check that all screws on the runners are tightened securely but not over-tightened, as this can damage the material of the dresser and make the runners unstable.
Regarding the adjustment itself, MALM drawers do not have special screws for front alignment. The adjustment is usually done by gently sliding the drawer on the runners. You can also remove the drawer and realign the runners.
Tools: A small Phillips screwdriver and, if available, a spirit level can help ensure there is no sideways tilt.
Other common causes of issues include warped side panels, an uneven bottom panel, or the entire dresser being misaligned. If the dresser is not placed on a level surface, this can also affect the drawer alignment.
In summary:
1. Check the precise installation of the drawer runners.
2. Tighten screws carefully and firmly.
3. Use a spirit level to check the dresser and runners.
4. Make sure the surface underneath is even.
If this is not enough, small felt pads can be attached to the inside of the drawer front to compensate for minor imperfections.

Adjustment is usually done by slightly sliding the drawer on the runner rails.I doubt that simply sliding the drawer will permanently fix alignment issues. In my experience, the problem often lies more with the load on the runners and the material quality.
Frequent opening and closing can cause plastic guides to wear out or slightly deform over time, which results in drawers sitting crooked. In such cases, a simple realignment doesn’t provide a long-term solution.
It might be worth considering how to reduce the load or whether it’s possible to replace the original runners with more durable alternatives.
Besides that, it would be interesting to know the condition of the base panel of your chest of drawers. Any settling of the floor could cause the chest to lean slightly, which would worsen the problem.
Have you checked whether the chest is truly level? A basic spirit level may not be precise enough, and slight inclinations of just a few millimeters can have a significant impact.
Hello Sulejman,
I can only add to the points you mentioned. The MALM series from IKEA uses extendable metal rails with plastic rollers, which are usually sufficient for normal use. However, under heavy loads, such as with heavy contents or frequent movements, they can easily warp or the plastic may wear down. This can cause the drawers to no longer run smoothly or to shift out of place.
What might help:
- Open and close the drawers very carefully and evenly. Sudden force can damage the guides.
- If needed, gently clean the rollers or guide rails and treat them with a dry lubricant (e.g., PTFE spray). Please avoid oil-based products, as they attract dust.
- The drawer rails on MALM usually can be unscrewed without much effort. Check if replacement parts are available. Sometimes it is worth buying new rails if the wear is severe.
Also, check if all screws holding the rails are really in the correct positions. It is more common than you might think for mounting points to shift.
If you are unsure, I recommend completely removing the drawer and checking whether the side guides are flat and clean. You can also use a spirit level to verify if everything is aligned properly.
If you want, I can also send you instructions on how I checked and cleaned the guide rails on my own unit.

It would be interesting to know the condition of the base of your dresser. The dresser actually stands on a wooden floor that is slightly uneven. I am currently using small self-adhesive felt pads under the dresser’s feet to compensate for minor unevenness.

Open and close drawers very carefully and evenly. That’s a good tip. I have noticed that I often pull the drawer out quickly and with more force, which is probably not ideal.
In general, I plan to thoroughly check the drawer slides and mounting points again and, if necessary, adjust or clean them at the end.
Does anyone have tips on the best way to properly adjust the drawer slides? How should I handle gently shifting the drawer to get the optimal fit? Is there anything in particular to watch out for?
