Hello everyone, I am currently considering how to use the popular BILLY shelves from IKEA effectively in the bathroom, but I want to make sure I don’t make any mistakes. The problem is often the high humidity in bathrooms, which can quickly damage wooden shelves. My idea was to use the shelves for towels, cosmetics, and possibly cleaning supplies, but I am wondering how to best protect the material from moisture or whether I should treat or modify the shelves. Are there any experienced users who have tips on which modifications would be useful or what kind of maintenance I should keep in mind? I am also interested in whether there are special BILLY versions or additional accessories that are particularly suitable for bathroom use. I look forward to ideas or experiences because I want to avoid the shelves deteriorating or becoming unstable after a short time. Thank you in advance!

Basically, the BILLY shelf is made of particleboard coated with melamine foil – this provides some protection against moisture, but it is not waterproof. This means that with direct water contact or consistently high humidity over time, the edges may swell and the material can warp.

A proven method is to seal the visible wooden edges with water-repellent paint or clear varnish. Make sure the paint is suitable for particleboard and has a flexible finish, as rigid coatings can crack and peel when exposed to moisture. Alternatively, a special marine varnish designed for wet environments can be used, as it forms durable layers resistant to moisture.

I also recommend not placing the shelves directly against damp walls but leaving a small gap to allow better air circulation so the material can dry more quickly. If you remove the back panel of the shelf, air flow will increase, but be sure to consider the shelf’s stability carefully.

Another tip: use shelf boards made of laminate or water-resistant materials instead of the original boards, which you can fit into the BILLY frame. This significantly improves durability against moisture.

Regarding accessories: IKEA offers various inserts and boxes, including plastic or waterproof options, which integrate well into BILLY shelves.

I’m curious, how large is your bathroom and what is the usual humidity level during and after showering? Have you already chosen a specific spot for the shelf?

I would like to add that regular maintenance is especially important for shelves in the bathroom, particularly if they are not fully water-resistant bathroom furniture. It’s best to avoid standing water and occasionally wipe the surface dry, especially after showering.

If you want to equip the shelf with doors, IKEA also offers suitable glass or wooden doors for BILLY, which can further reduce water infiltration.

Another option might be to place acrylic or PVC liners on the shelves before putting down cosmetics or bottles. This helps prevent moisture directly and provides additional protection.

Honestly, if the bathroom is rather small and has limited air circulation, I would carefully reconsider using BILLY shelves. Sometimes open metal shelves or specialized bathroom furniture are more practical.

Still, I think the idea is good. With proper adjustment and protection, the shelf can be an affordable and flexible solution. Good luck with your project!

That’s great that you want to use the BILLY shelves in your bathroom! 🙂 I did something similar about a year ago and use them for towels and containers.

My advice is to treat the shelves with a waterproof clear varnish; that worked really well. Additionally, I installed small silicone seals under the shelf feet to prevent water from running onto the floor surface.

That was very helpful, thanks for the tip!

I also installed a small fan to reduce humidity. This way, the wood stays almost like new.

Be patient, the setup takes some preparation, but it’s definitely worth it! 😉

I find it interesting that everyone here assumes BILLY shelves need to be treated or modified to resist moisture. Sure, they’re not designed as bathroom furniture, but honestly: why not just use a simpler metal shelf and avoid all the wood-related issues?

That’s a nice idea, but I don’t think everyone wants to upgrade their bathroom technically just to make a budget shelf last.

Maybe we should reconsider how we use them: do we really need wooden shelves in the bathroom? There are better options in terms of hygiene and mold prevention, rather than constantly trying to fix things ourselves.

What do you think? Does it really have to be BILLY, or is it more of a style choice?
