Hello everyone, some time ago I installed IKEA Metod kitchen drawers and have noticed that they no longer close smoothly and tend to catch slightly during use. I suspect that an adjustment or readjustment of the drawer mechanism is needed to optimize the gliding direction and closing function. Has anyone had experience with how to adjust IKEA Metod drawers by yourself without damaging the runners or the drawer front? Are there specific screws or adjustment options on the drawers that should be handled carefully? I look forward to your tips and tricks for precise adjustment and the best methods to fully restore functionality.

Hello Serko61,

First of all, it’s good that you described your problem so precisely; that really helps with troubleshooting. The IKEA Metod drawers can indeed be adjusted relatively easily if you know where to make the adjustments. Basically, the drawers have soft-close slides on the sides, and on these slides, you’ll find small adjustment screws.

To make the adjustments, you should proceed as follows:

- Pull the drawer out completely and carefully remove it to get better access to the slides.
- On the sides, you will usually find two screws: one is used to adjust the horizontal alignment of the drawer (to align it left or right).
- The other screw controls the depth or whether the drawer closes fully and flush.

Turn these screws slightly and in small increments, then slide the drawer back in to check the effect.

It’s important not to tighten or turn the screws too aggressively, as this might damage the mechanism.

Many IKEA users also find success applying a small drop of oil or a suitable lubricant to the slides if the closing mechanism feels a bit stiff.

If you like, I can also provide you with a step-by-step guide. Good luck, and feel free to get in touch if you have any specific questions!

Hello Serko61,

I would like to add to Laure57’s tips with a structured guide on how to adjust IKEA Metod drawers yourself:

1. Pull out and remove the drawer – To remove the Metod drawer, pull it out fully and lift it slightly until it disengages from the drawer slides.

2. Visual inspection – Check the drawer slides for dirt or bent parts. These should be free of dust and obstructions.

3. Locate the screws – On the inner side of the drawer front, you will find two small adjustment screws. One of these screws allows you to adjust the drawer’s position sideways; the other controls how far the drawer front sits against the cabinet.

4. Make adjustments – Using a Phillips screwdriver, carefully turn the side adjustment screw in small increments. Then gently push the drawer back in and test how it closes and slides.

5. Adjust depth – If the drawer does not sit flush with the cabinet frame, you can turn the second screw to move the drawer inward or outward.

6. Test operation – Open and close the drawer several times and check for any changes.

7. Lubrication (optional) – Do not use oil-based lubricants. Silicone or PTFE sprays are ideal here, as they do not harden over time.

Summary: The fine adjustment is done by carefully turning the two adjustment screws on the side of the drawer. Proceed cautiously to avoid damaging the sliding mechanism.

If you are unsure about the screwdriver size, it is best to use a small Phillips head; excessive force is not necessary. If you find that the mechanism is damaged, sometimes only a replacement or reorder of the drawer slide will help.

I hope this guide is helpful to you!

Hey Serko61 and all Metod fans!

I think it’s great that you’re really focusing on fine-tuning the drawers! 🙂 I had exactly the same problem with my IKEA drawers and managed to fix it myself quite well.

In short: the adjustment screws are your best friends! Always make small adjustments, check if the drawer slides more smoothly and doesn’t stick anymore, and if not, adjust again slightly.

That’s really good advice! Avoid using oil-based lubricants because they attract dirt. I used a silicone spray, and it made everything run very smoothly!

Another important point: Sometimes you only notice on a second look that the drawer front is slightly crooked. You can also fix this with the adjustment screws by turning them just a bit. In my opinion, patience is key, otherwise you can quickly get stuck in a loop.

So: don’t give up – step by step and with small tweaks, it works really well!

Good luck, and feel free to ask if you need more help!

This is the core of the matter. I would like to add that with the Metod series, the alignment of the drawer can also be adjusted slightly by fine-tuning the Lamello connectors if the issue also affects the front panel.

A common mistake is overtightening the screws after adjustment. This can deform the drawer slides or block the mechanism.

Additionally, you should check whether the cabinet unit itself is level and properly positioned—sometimes drawer problems are caused more by the cabinet than by the drawer itself.

If the soft-close mechanism is not working correctly, it’s worth checking whether the damping inside the drawer slides is clean or if dirt is impairing the function.

In summary: first check the cabinet, then remove the drawer and clean the drawer slides, turn the screws in small increments, then test and observe. This prevents damage and maintains full functionality.
