ᐅ How can I adjust Ikea BESTA units for different ceiling heights?

LegojonHello everyone,
I am currently planning to redesign my living room and have chosen the IKEA Besta series because it looks flexible and modern. However, my challenge is the varying ceiling heights – some areas of the apartment have about 2.30 meters (7 feet 7 inches) ceiling height, while other parts are rather tall at around 2.80 meters (9 feet 2 inches).
My question: How can I adapt the IKEA Besta system so that it fits both visually and functionally with these different room heights? What options are there to adjust Besta units or cabinets for various wall heights without them looking odd or losing stability?
I would prefer not to just place a shelf that ends up looking cramped or awkward. Are there any tips for smart combinations, mounting methods, or maybe extensions that could help here?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Legojon! Great question, I really love the BESTA series too! 😄
My recommendation is to use height as a design element and work with modules of different heights – for example, combine tall wall cabinets in the higher areas and lower sideboards where the ceilings are lower. This creates a dynamic look and makes the most of every centimeter (inch).
You can also add height or create visual balance with plinths or additional top panels. And remember: using lighting and color accents can make the space even more harmonious! Good luck, you’ve got this!

Hello Legojon,
to adapt BESTA to different ceiling heights, I can recommend the following:
- Measure your ceiling heights precisely.
- Choose different module sizes depending on the height. The BESTA series, for example, offers various heights between 38 cm and 128 cm (15 inches and 50 inches).
- For low ceilings, a wider, shallower shelving unit might work better.
- Use wall fixings to ensure additional stability for taller tables or cabinets.
- You can also combine multiple modules to achieve different heights, making the cabinets look custom-made.
Avoid simply stacking the modules if they are not secured, as this can quickly become unsafe.
Can you provide some details about the dimensions of the modules you already have or plan to purchase?

Here’s how I see it: the existing modules from the BESTA series that I’m considering are mostly 38 cm (15 inches) or 64 cm (25 inches) high. For the 2.30-meter (7 ft 7 in) section, I was thinking of rather lower cabinets, maybe 128 cm (50 inches) tall. Stacking them is basically possible, but I’m actually concerned about stability, especially if someone bumps into them.
In the 2.80-meter (9 ft 2 in) high area, I could theoretically build higher, but the ceiling offsets and beams aren’t ideal. That’s why I prefer to stay modular and avoid bulky tall units.
Are there perhaps suitable top panels or facings to visually bridge the gap between the modules in the end?
Hello Legojon,
I like to go into detail with such modifications because many construction and product-specific aspects come into play here.
BESTA is available in several height options, as you already mentioned, for example, 38 cm (15 inches), 64 cm (25 inches), and 128 cm (50 inches). You can combine different modules, but you should keep the following in mind:
- Stability: For tall structures, wall mounting is essential. This is especially important when stacking modules, as the connection between individual elements must be secure to prevent tipping. IKEA provides connection hardware for this purpose.
- Adjusting to different ceiling heights: I recommend using ceiling gaps or cover panels. You can use custom-made or pre-sized top panels to visually balance height differences. Since BESTA does not allow specifically adjustable heights, these add-on parts help.
- Combining module sizes: In lower ceiling areas, two 64 cm (25 inches) modules stacked could fit, together 128 cm (50 inches) plus the base. In higher areas, you could place a 128 cm (50 inches) module with a 64 cm (25 inches) module on top and finish with a well-designed cover or spacer panel.
- Base height: You can raise or adjust the standard base height using individual wooden strips (e.g., plywood), which makes the transition to the wall height more flexible.
- Fronts and finishes: Uniform fronts create a calmer look; different heights can be highlighted with various front designs or colors.
Please feel free to provide more details about the installation site, such as wall materials, ceiling type, or whether you plan additional lighting. This would help make the advice more precise.
