Hello everyone,

I have a wall surface at home that isn’t perfectly straight – it’s rather irregular with slight curves and small corners that aren’t at right angles. I would like to install Billy shelves there because I really need the storage space. However, I’m concerned about how to fit the shelves as precisely as possible to these uneven wall surfaces.

Has anyone had experience with adapting these IKEA classics to such a wall without them wobbling or looking awkward? Is it enough to simply fix the shelves in place and then fill any gaps with silicone or similar sealants? Or are there clever tricks to modify or adjust the shelves so they stand securely and fit well visually?

I appreciate any tips, suggestions, or links to helpful tools and hardware store products. Thanks in advance!

I know this well, as I also have a BILLY bookshelf on a slightly uneven wall. I used small wooden wedges and brackets to bridge the gaps and securely attach the shelf. It takes some patience and trial and error, but the result turned out better than I expected.

What I also recommend is trimming or adjusting the back panel of the shelf if the wall is very uneven. Doing this allows the shelf to sit more flush.

Using silicone later on is a good idea to make it look neat.

Are you confident with DIY? If so, I’d be happy to go into more detail on how to proceed step by step.

I would recommend measuring the wall precisely first. Then use shims to level out any unevenness. Don’t forget the wall fixings, as they provide stability. If necessary, adjust the shelves or back panels, as this often ensures the best fit.

Very good tip! I’d like to add some technical details:

1. Wall measurement: It’s best to use a spirit level (preferably a digital one for better accuracy) and mark all unevenness and bulges on the wall. Measure all distances several times, not just once.

2. Shelf inspection: Measure the back panel and side panels of the BILLY shelves beforehand. If the wall is very uneven, it is worthwhile to adjust the back panel (usually thin chipboard) to match the wall contours using a jigsaw or a hand saw – this way you can bring the shelf closer to the wall.

3. Wedges: It is recommended to buy sturdy but thin wooden or plastic wedges that you can insert at the back and bottom to compensate for the irregularities. Be sure to fix these wedges in place when screwing, so they don’t slip.

4. Fixing: Use longer screws if possible and secure the shelf in several points in the wall with appropriate anchors, especially if your wall is drywall (plasterboard). This fixing prevents the shelf from tipping.

5. Appearance: Small gaps between the shelf and the wall can be filled with acrylic sealant. This can be painted over easily on white shelves and gives a clean finish.

6. Fine adjustment: Especially if you stack shelves higher, it’s worth aligning the individual units exactly. There are special connectors available for joining the individual BILLY modules.

One more question: How deep and wide is the unevenness in your wall? Is it a small area or about the whole wall?

Your concern is very valid because BILLY shelves tend to tilt or stand unevenly on slanted or bulging walls due to their narrow frame if they are not secured properly.

What I recommend is to check whether the back panel lies flat against the wall before placing the shelf. If it doesn’t, you can slightly trim the back panel using sandpaper or a chisel. This greatly improves stability.

Although the appearance is important, I would prioritize secure mounting. Be sure to fasten the shelf to the wall with appropriate wall plugs (anchors) and screws, and if possible, use several brackets for support.

Another good tip is to carefully check the surface underneath—the shelf can tilt if placed on old floors or uneven tiles. Stable, self-adhesive felt pads or small leveling plates can help here.

If you like, I can also provide a brief overview of which materials you should ideally get from the hardware store.

I completely agree! Especially when building shelves, the saying “Well planned is half done” applies even more with an uneven wall like yours. 🙂

What I often do: If the wall is really “quirky,” I take my time and make small test pieces from wood to fit against the wall. This way, you can see exactly where the shelf rests and where there’s a gap.

Also, sometimes you can achieve more than you think – with a bit of patience, you can adapt any BILLY shelf to look decent. Very important: stay relaxed, it’s not the end of the world if it’s not 100% perfect.

To finish things off nicely, I use silicone sealant in a matching color to neatly cover any gaps.

Have fun with your project! If you like, feel free to give an update on how it’s going. :-)
