Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I assembled a few Ikea Besta units and now I’m considering how to add integrated lighting to them. My main goal is to have lighting that looks discreet and smart, meaning it should be installed subtly inside the cabinet without requiring major modifications afterwards.
I’ve heard about LED strips that can be mounted in the shelves and also about switchable light bars that can be controlled by remote or even by an app. However, I’m not very familiar with the electrical side of things, especially regarding wiring and power supply.
Therefore, my question is: What are the specific options for upgrading Ikea BESTA furniture with discreet, integrated lighting? What types of LEDs are suitable, how can the power supply be handled unobtrusively, and what should I be careful about during installation to avoid damaging the furniture or compromising safety?
I appreciate any tips, experiences, or recommendations!

Regarding the question of light quality and safety, I would like to add:
- Light quality: There are LED strips with adjustable color temperature (from warm white around 2700K to cool white). Such "tunable white" LED strips offer flexibility and are highly recommended if you want to adjust the atmosphere.
- Safety: Using 230V directly inside furniture is problematic due to potential damage to insulation or improper installation. Power adapters (converting 230V to 12V or 24V) are safe if they are certified and correctly connected.
- You can usually place the power supply next to the furniture, plugged into a wall outlet. It is important that the cables are properly secured and not bent.
- For wiring inside the furniture, I recommend thin, flexible wires (e.g., stranded cables) with an adequate cross-section.
In summary: use low-voltage LEDs with appropriate power adapters, choose high-quality products, and plan the cable routing with enough slack.

I want to emphasize the simple installation again: just place the LED strips inside the shelves, hidden from view, with the 12V power adapter tucked away somewhere at the back of the cabinet.
If you value convenience, you can also choose a remote control or app control – these often come as a set with the LED and controller, making installation very easy.
A small tip: sometimes, IKEA Besta cabinets require small cutouts or openings in the back panels to neatly route the cables. A utility knife and patience will help with this.
Good luck sprucing up your furniture!

I find this topic really interesting and want to encourage you: with a bit of planning, anyone can turn their Ikea BESTA furniture into real eye-catchers! 😊
Some time ago, I also installed LED strips, and the real highlight is the warm white lighting with a dimmer – it instantly makes the atmosphere much cozier.
One more tip from me: if you like DIY projects, RGB LED strips that you can control via an app are worth considering. That way, you can adjust the mood when you have guests!
Don’t be discouraged by the cables – it’s actually quite easy to manage!
