Hello everyone, I am currently planning to redesign my kitchen with Ikea Metod kitchen units to be accessible. My main question is: how can the standard Metod series be adapted or modified to meet the requirements of barrier-free living? I am thinking about aspects like easily accessible drawers, adjusted countertop heights, and sufficient maneuvering space for wheelchair users. Are there proven modifications, such as replacing base cabinet doors with pull-out shelves or using special handles and fittings? I am also interested in options for ergonomically integrating appliances into the kitchen modules. I look forward to tips, specific examples, or recommendations for suitable accessories and alterations that are easy to implement during assembly or as retrofits.

Metod is modular; use base cabinets with pull-out systems for easier access. Adjust the countertop height to 90-95 cm (35-37 inches) instead of the standard 80 cm (31 inches). For handles, I recommend bar pulls that provide a good grip. Plan spare lights and electrical outlets so they are not obstructed. Enable wheelchair access by using open base cabinets.

I think that’s a very good approach. I recently did a similar renovation for my mother, who uses a wheelchair. It was important for us that she could reach everything easily and that nothing was installed too low or too high.

I can only agree with that; we went with 92 cm (36 inches) – it makes a huge difference.

What else helped me was replacing regular drawers with full-extension drawers so the back areas can be used well. I would also recommend considering electric openers in case strength is ever limited.

I’m curious if anyone here has experience integrating height-adjustable work surfaces with Metod? That could be even more flexible.

Use base cabinets with easy-to-operate pull-outs and replace doors with drawers.

Increase the countertop height to about 90 cm (35 inches).

Plan open spaces under countertops to allow wheelchair access.

Handles should be easy to grip, preferably horizontal or bow-shaped handles.

For appliances, built-in ovens with front-opening doors and elevated controls are recommended.
