Hello everyone,

I recently bought some Ikea Brimnes furniture and now face the challenge of securing it during transport to avoid any unsightly damage. Since the furniture is made of particleboard or MDF, I know how delicate these materials are, especially at the edges and surfaces that can be easily damaged by impact or friction.

So my question to you is: What specific measures have you taken to prevent damage to Ikea Brimnes furniture during transport? I am particularly interested in tips on packaging, handling, and loading, also considering the home transport with a regular car or van.

Are there any proven protective materials or methods that have worked well for you? I really want to avoid scratches, dents, or chips occurring during the very first transport after purchase.

Thanks in advance for your experiences and tips!

Hello Pajosar,

To prevent damage to Ikea Brimnes furniture during transport, I recommend the following structured approach:

- Use bubble wrap or at least thick blankets to wrap all furniture pieces. Pay special attention to protecting the edges with multiple layers.
- Make sure the furniture is not loosely placed in the vehicle – securing it with straps or tie-downs is necessary to prevent shifting.
- Avoid direct contact with the floor by using cardboard or foam inserts to create shock-absorbing buffers.
- When loading, try to keep the furniture upright and place heavier items at the bottom to avoid pressure marks.

Personally, I have had good experiences with specialized furniture moving blankets. They effectively protect surfaces from scratches and minor impacts.

If transporting with a car, it is advisable to secure the furniture in the largest possible trunk space and use sufficient padding between furniture pieces and the vehicle walls.

Hello Pajosar,

I would like to go into more technical details to prevent any potential damage.

Brimnes furniture is mostly made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with a thin plastic coating. These surfaces are quite sensitive to abrasion, pressure marks, and moisture.

Step 1: Packaging
- Use sturdy outer packaging, preferably the original packaging if possible.
- Otherwise, use bubble wrap with at least 100 µm (0.1 mm) thickness to avoid pressure points.

Step 2: Impact Protection
- Edges should be additionally protected with edge guards made of foam or corrugated cardboard to prevent dents from impacts or tight loading.
- Place cushioning layers like foam mats or thick blankets between the furniture pieces.

Step 3: Loading
- Furniture should not lie flat on hard surfaces. It is better to position them upright, always using a stable base.
- Securing the load is essential – it’s recommended to use at least two tie-down points per piece inside the vehicle.

Step 4: Transport Conditions
- Avoid extreme temperature fluctuations and moisture, as MDF parts can swell.

One more question: How large are the furniture pieces you need to transport? Sometimes it makes sense to disassemble individual parts and protect them separately to make the transport more flexible and secure.

I can only confirm this recommendation. Additionally, I would like to add that when loading, it is essential to ensure the furniture does not come into direct contact with sharp or pointed objects inside the vehicle. Padding the entire cargo area with blankets or foam helps to prevent pressure damage.

It is also advisable, if possible, to transport the furniture pieces individually rather than stacking them. Although the surface of Brimnes furniture is durable against normal wear, deep scratches and chips caused by friction or impact are very difficult to repair.

A practical tip: Check all connection points for stability before transport, as loose parts are more easily damaged by movement. When strapping down, apply gentle tension without exerting excessive force that could warp the material.

Finally, a question: Do you plan to transport the furniture yourself or use a professional delivery service? The approach might differ slightly depending on this.
