Hello everyone,

I recently bought a few BILLY shelves from IKEA and plan to transport them soon—both by car and later by freight. Unfortunately, I’m concerned that the shelves might get damaged during transport, such as scratches, dents, or warped wood parts.

So, my question to the community is: How can damage to BILLY shelves be best prevented during transport?

I’m especially interested in practical advice on how to pack the shelves, which protective materials are suitable, how to secure them properly inside the vehicle, and if there are any special precautions when loading and unloading.

It might also be helpful to know whether it’s better to transport the shelves fully assembled or disassembled.

I’m looking forward to your experiences and tips!

A supplement to the previous advice based on my experience:

If you fully disassemble the shelf, carefully inspect the edges of the wooden parts. Especially with older or already slightly damaged shelves, it is advisable to protect the edges with painter’s tape. This tape absorbs minor impacts and prevents chipping.

For transport in a small truck, the shelf components should preferably lie flat on the floor to avoid deformation from pressure. It is sensible to place them on a level, non-slip surface, such as a rubber mat or thick rugs.

After loading, make sure to secure all loose parts well. Often, strapping only the large parts is not enough – small bags of screws and loose shelves should also be secured inside closed boxes or bags.

One last tip: When moving, allow enough time to carefully load and later reassemble the shelves. Rushing increases the likelihood of mistakes and damage.

I’m just wondering if it’s enough to secure the parts with blankets and straps for transport in a car

If I may reassure you briefly: for a short trip, like from the store to your home, that is absolutely sufficient! 🙂

I have transported my BILLY shelves that way multiple times: blanket around them, buckle them in, drive carefully, done.

What I have never done but would definitely recommend to everyone—depending on the length of the trip—is to drive slowly and avoid hard braking. This protects the shelves more than you might expect.

And don’t worry, with something like
