I recently assembled several Brimnes cabinets from Ikea and noticed that they tend to feel flexible and wobble somewhat, especially when fully loaded. The design is quite slim, which is part of the issue, and I’m wondering how to improve their stability without completely rebuilding them or affecting their appearance. What measures or simple tricks are available to enhance both their sturdiness and long-term durability? I’m thinking of reinforcements or additional anchoring, but also possible improvements to the support surfaces or fasteners. I look forward to your tips on how to effectively and permanently stabilize this commonly used series.

It is best to secure the cabinets to the wall, as this greatly improves stability. Additionally, you can adjust the feet to ensure they sit flat. If there is still some clearance, small brackets can be installed inside to reinforce the corners.

This is a common issue with lightweight furniture of this type. Besides securing the units to the wall, there are several other tips that can help:

- Be sure to use the supplied metal brackets as Ikea recommends and install them properly. They help maintain the structure.
- For improved stability, securing the back panel additionally can be beneficial. Often it is only held in place by small nails – using small screws here can help if the cabinet frame allows it.
- If the cabinets stand on a carpet, this can reduce stability. A hard, level surface is better.
- Inside, self-adhesive felt pads can be used on the shelf supports to improve contact points and prevent tilting under very heavy loads.

It is important not to overload the cabinets and to keep an eye on the weight distribution on the shelves.

For my Brimnes cabinets, I implemented the following solutions:

- Added extra screws at the joints of the side panels to stiffen the structure.
- Used metal corner brackets inside the corners.
- Replaced the existing dowels with sturdier wooden dowels or self-tapping screws if they felt loose.
- Reinforced the cabinet bottom with an additional panel to prevent sagging.

These measures require little time but significantly enhance the cabinets’ stability.
