Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the issue of wanting to set up my BILLY shelves from IKEA securely on a carpeted floor. I have noticed that the shelves do not stand completely straight and are somewhat wobbly, which is especially problematic on thick or plush carpets.
I would like to know how you stabilize your BILLY shelves on carpets without making major modifications to the shelves themselves. Are there any proven methods to minimize the wobbling?
Tips regarding the combination of shelves and carpet, possible underlays, or special additional fastenings would also be very helpful.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hey GIJONU!
The classic topic of BILLY shelves on carpet! 😊 I’ve had good results placing flat plastic or felt pads under the shelf feet, which helps distribute the pressure better and reduces sinking into the carpet. Even better: place a thin wooden board (e.g., plywood) underneath to spread the load over a larger area – basically a small “base plate.”
Additionally, you can secure the shelf to the wall, which significantly increases stability and is recommended. If you’re not allowed to drill holes into the wall, some furniture stores also offer clamp fittings.
This way, you can control any wobbling while still keeping the carpet. Good luck! 🙂

Really interesting topic, I love BILLY shelves! 😍
I tried using a combination of rubber mats and spacers under the feet to make the shelf sit extremely firmly. The rubber mat doesn’t slip down through the carpet – this prevents sinking, and the spacers ensure precise alignment.
I did that too, and it provides great stability!
I also use small spirit levels to make sure everything is perfectly level. This is especially important with thick carpets; otherwise, the shelf keeps wobbling.
If you want it even more secure, try wall mounting with small brackets – that gives a really good feeling of safety. Good luck stabilizing your BILLY shelf! 🙂

Timmyse366 Jul 2023 21:12I can understand how frustrating it can be when a shelf wobbles. Especially on carpet, it can quickly feel unstable.
I also searched for a long time and found that it helps to realign the feet of the shelf and to use double-sided carpet tape to basically secure the bottom feet to the carpet.
That’s a really good tip! Especially on uneven floors, that’s essential.
If you don’t want to have visible wall brackets in your apartment, you might also consider sticking small silicone pads under the feet. That prevents slipping and is quite discreet.
Hope you find a solution that makes you feel comfortable! 🙂
