Hello everyone,
I have the following problem: I want to secure my IKEA Billy bookcases to the wall, but there are no existing anchor or drill holes in the wall. The wall is quite old, and I want to avoid damaging it unnecessarily, but of course, the bookcase should also stand securely and stably. What are the options for mounting Billy bookcases to a wall when there are no anchor holes, or if I don’t want to drill new holes? Are there alternative fastening methods, such as special adhesive systems, brackets, or other tricks that I should consider? I would really appreciate practical tips as well as advice on safety and load capacity. Thanks in advance!

- No holes = no wall brackets.
- Place the shelf freestanding.
- Weigh down the shelf at the base, for example with shelves or weights.
If the wall is very solidly built, get help with anchors. That’s all there is to it.

If there are no pre-existing dowel holes or if new ones cannot be drilled, I recommend increasing the stability of the shelf by taking the following measures:
- Attach additional back panels (if not already present) to improve balance.
- Install feet with anti-slip pads.
- Place lighter items at the bottom and heavier objects on the lower shelves.
Since wall mounting without drill holes is not secure, the shelf should ideally not be loaded heavily or moved during regular use.

First, you need to know whether the wall is solid (concrete, masonry) or hollow (drywall, plasterboard). This is essential. For example, a drywall can be fitted with appropriate cavity anchors or special fixings. If you want to avoid drilling holes, practical alternatives are very limited.

Adhesive solutions are not a long-term option.I can only agree with this assessment.
My advice to the person asking: Making a small, discreet hole to use an anchor often offers the best balance between security and minimal damage.
