Hello everyone,
I am planning to use IKEA Billy shelves in my bathroom, which is unfortunately classified as a wet room and has relatively high humidity levels. The Billy shelves are basically made of particleboard, which is usually not designed for wet environments. So my question is: How can Billy shelves be adapted for use in wet rooms to ensure their durability and functionality despite the moisture?
Are there specific protective measures for the materials, or maybe tips for surface protection? Should the installation be modified, for example by improving ventilation or leaving a gap between the shelves and the wall? I want to make the shelves last as long as possible without completely switching to alternatives.
I would appreciate concrete suggestions, especially detailed experiences with such modifications.
Thank you in advance!

I sealed my Billy shelves in the bathroom with clear varnish and also used small washers under the feetThanks for the practical tips! The idea of using washers to create a gap from the floor sounds feasible and easy to implement.

For surface sealing, I recommend solvent-based PU (polyurethane) varnishesHow much effort is involved in applying multiple coats of PU varnish? Do I need to take special precautions, or can I use regular varnish and a brush?
It would be great if someone could share their experience with sealing in humid environments, especially regarding durability and maintenance.
