Hello everyone,

I am planning to use IKEA Billy shelves in my bathroom, which is unfortunately classified as a wet room and has relatively high humidity levels. The Billy shelves are basically made of particleboard, which is usually not designed for wet environments. So my question is: How can Billy shelves be adapted for use in wet rooms to ensure their durability and functionality despite the moisture?

Are there specific protective measures for the materials, or maybe tips for surface protection? Should the installation be modified, for example by improving ventilation or leaving a gap between the shelves and the wall? I want to make the shelves last as long as possible without completely switching to alternatives.

I would appreciate concrete suggestions, especially detailed experiences with such modifications.

Thank you in advance!

The most important thing is to properly seal the shelves. Use a moisture-resistant varnish or a waterproof wood lacquer.

It is also recommended not to place the shelf directly against the wall, but to leave a gap of a few centimeters to allow for air circulation.

For clarification: Billy bookcases are made from coated particleboard, which tends to absorb moisture and can therefore swell.

One option is to seal the surface additionally with waterproof acrylic lacquer or polyurethane. Furthermore, all cut edges and drill holes should be carefully treated afterward, as these areas are particularly vulnerable.

Another point: The assembly should be done as loosely as possible, without excessive tension, so that the material can accommodate minimal moisture expansion without bulging or warping.

This is great—so many tips are already coming together here! 🙂

I sealed my Billy shelves in the bathroom with clear varnish and also used small washers under the feet to prevent the wood from coming into contact with water on the floor. This way, they stay stable for a very long time!

Regular ventilation also makes a big difference. Good luck to everyone who wants to try it out!!!

I take a practical view on this, but I wonder how durable this moisture treatment really is. Bathrooms often have high and persistent humidity, sometimes with splashing water.

I would rather recommend alternative materials, such as metal shelves or specially coated moisture-resistant wood-based panels, as they are significantly more durable.

For those who still want to modify the Billy shelves, it might be necessary to renew the moisture treatment every few years. This does not necessarily provide long-term protection.

I agree. Additionally, the shelf can be placed on feet that are corrosion-resistant and provide enough clearance from the floor.

For surface sealing, I recommend solvent-based polyurethane (PU) varnishes, as they are significantly more resistant to moisture than water-based varnishes. Applying multiple coats considerably improves protection.

Furthermore, good ventilation and minimizing direct splash water exposure during installation should be ensured.

However, the shelf remains a compromise, not a perfect wet-room cabinet.
