Hello everyone, I recently bought an Ikea Platsa shelving unit and am considering how to easily and effectively modify it to better suit my living space and interior style. It is important to me that the changes are not too complicated or expensive but still create a noticeable improvement in the atmosphere and appearance of the room. I am particularly interested in which materials or methods work well for altering the surface (e.g., painting, applying adhesive covers, or other techniques) and how to smartly make use of the modular design of the Platsa system in the process. Additionally, I would like to know if there are any tried-and-tested DIY tips to make the storage more functional without having to buy costly accessories. Who has experience or concrete advice on simple yet effective ways to transform the Platsa shelving unit?

In addition to the options already mentioned, I recommend considering the lighting—LED strips or small spotlights inside or on the shelves give the Platsa a modern upgrade.

When painting, I would recommend using chalk paint or lime paint. This gives the furniture a matte, almost velvety surface and is relatively easy to apply.

For a durable and hard-wearing surface, however, specialized furniture paints are usually better than chalk paint, as they are more resistant to wear.

Changing the fronts, such as replacing doors or customizing them yourself (for example, with fabric or wooden panels), also adds a lot of individuality with little effort.

Combining different module heights is practical to make the shelving unit visually more interesting while optimizing storage space.
