ᐅ House Electricity Consumption – Usage Figures for Comparison

Hello,

I know there are many factors affecting electricity consumption, so it might be a bit of guesswork. Still, I want to give it a try.

We have a ground-source heat pump (deep drilling). We heat about 170 sqm (1,830 sq ft) with it and don’t have large electricity consumers like an aquarium, etc. Our house meets the KFW 55 standard.

Currently, we use roughly 30 kWh per day on average for everything (heating and regular electricity). We rarely have temperatures below freezing at night. When I calculate the consumption over 30 days, it comes to about €250 per month in winter. Of course, consumption is naturally lower in summer.

Does anyone have comparable numbers? We just moved in in October, and I’m wondering if the heating system is working properly (efficiently) and if the output from the ground loop is as expected.

Looking forward to your feedback.

Greetings from Lake Constance,

Oh dear, with electricity consumption PER HOUR, it almost pays off to have your own power plant.

Now, something constructive:
Try googling heat pump consumption database or add a .de at the end... That will probably help you best to assess electricity consumption. I think the household electricity is within a reasonable range.

Hahaha – yes, you’re right. But I’ve found the mistake or the reason why you came to that conclusion.

The annual performance factor for hot water seems a bit low. What is your current brine temperature and what hot water setpoint temperature do you have?

I checked: the inlet temperature averages around 5°C (41°F). Hot water temperature is set at 50°C (122°F). However, it also depends on where the sensor is located inside the boiler. The room setpoint temperature is 20°C (68°F).

My builder said that electricity costs are higher than usual in the first year (we moved in November 2017). Heating costs should then settle at around 600-800 per year. Our house also hasn’t been plastered yet, which could be a factor as well.

Do you really need water that warm? I also started at 50°C (122°F) and have now lowered it to 48°C (118°F). This improved the annual performance factor (APF) by 0.2 and reduced compressor run times at higher load levels. So far, a 170-liter (45-gallon) tank has been sufficient. When four adults shower, it gets a bit tight.

The delta T of 5°C (9°F) is, of course, great; my baskets are currently delivering only 0.2°C (0.4°F) at the beginning of the cycle and drop to -4.0°C (7°F) during a combined heating and hot water cycle.

Isn't it necessary to keep it at 60°C (140°F) because of germs? Legionella? Above 60°C (140°F) they die?
