Hello everyone,

in another thread, there was a discussion about whether nowadays more people build with or without a basement. I am curious to hear your thoughts.

Best regards

If possible, we build without a basement.

We don’t have one. For us, it’s just a more expensive storage room.

For me, building without a basement is a no-go.
- Workshop, utility room, storage room
- Some also have an office, a recreational basement, or a sauna there
- Probably the only storage space in the house that stays cool even in summer

Basement rooms can also have regular windows, provided the surrounding soil is excavated and properly supported.

In relation to the rest of the house, the basement is, in my opinion, the most cost-effective space to create.

If you don’t need more than storage space, then maybe a basement doesn’t make sense.

This may not help you with your survey, but it’s interesting to read. Found it quickly – of course, there are more ongoing discussions.

Among other things, I rebuilt because I didn’t like our basement. I do laundry now where the bedrooms are, and my cleaning supplies are where I need them. We don’t need a party basement; here, the living room is available for that, and musty old dishes will clatter at the next wedding, not in the basement. If I had a sauna, it would be close to the wellness bathroom, which would be close to the bedroom.
If my husband had a bigger hobby, there would be a double garage instead of a single one on the property.
Bicycles and garden tools don’t have to deal with stairs, and stairs are generally annoying anyway.
Our office is on the ground floor, close to the family, and supplies are near the kitchen.

Bulky waste is never brought upstairs again anyway, and the era of clutter and hoarding belongs to the 19th century.
There is no need for a bunker anymore.

In our neighborhood with good soil, there is one or two basements. So, the money is not buried underground.

Basements are notorious for becoming clutter traps, and you don’t want to pass that burden on to your heirs. Digital photo albums don’t take up much space, and realistically, you don’t need eighty square meters (860 square feet) of jam jar storage. That’s just my personal opinion. My advisory opinion is a bit more nuanced: I base it on the terrain. The steeper the slope, which usually requires a foundation wall on the downhill side, the more I consider a basement worth thinking about.

On the other hand, when dealing with developed plots that already have basements under houses you want to demolish, I think it’s worth considering—even on flat land—whether it really makes sense to remove the existing basement and all the utility connections along with the building.
