Hi!

As part of our house renovation, the flooring will also be replaced.
A new entrance vestibule measuring 2 x 3.5 m (6.5 x 11.5 ft) will be added as an extension to the existing house. An open staircase area will connect to it. The basement stairs (with access from the vestibule) are concrete, and the stairs from the ground floor to the upper floor are wooden.

It is certain that we want light-colored tiles with underfloor heating on the ground floor.

We would also like to tile the vestibule. The flooring for the concrete basement stairs is still undecided but should be durable enough to allow walking inside the ground floor with outdoor shoes or coming up from the basement (which has garden access) wearing suitable footwear without damaging the surface.

The question, therefore, is about a practical and appealing material and color scheme for the vestibule (tiles), basement stairs (material?), and ground floor (light tiles).

What are your experiences with this? Which colors work well together?

I would choose the same tiles throughout. This makes the room (or rooms) feel more spacious.

Hello!
Using the same tiles throughout helps reduce waste. However, light-colored tiles in the hallway are better suited for those who enjoy cleaning.
Of course, you shouldn’t use 17 different types of tiles. My suggestion would be to use a dark tile with a slate-like texture for the hallway and stairs—this texture helps with slip resistance on the stairs.
However, ease of cleaning and slip resistance tend to exclude each other.
In the hallway, I would also recommend installing a dirt-trapping mat flush with the floor. If you can find a tile size that matches the width of the steps, even better...
By the way, I used the tiles mentioned above in 90 x 45 cm (35 x 18 inches) in the bathroom—I didn’t want to risk breaking my hip later on. In the hallway, I have very light, very expensive, and very smooth tiles—which turned out to be a total disaster 😡.

Best regards,
