I agree with KTB and would add that the other part of the upper tile will probably be placed on the back wall, as the line is already drawn there. From the start, the white wall tiles should have been done differently if the height was not wanted visually. But: it’s all a matter of taste.

The shelf and tile piece will be white, so only the actual pre-wall surface will have the wood look.

There are no limits when it comes to personal taste. Well, there are plenty of installation patterns around the world. You just have to know what you like and what makes sense. A straight joint pattern always works and is often seen even in wood-look tile catalogs. But it wouldn’t be my choice; the “fake wood” effect comes across better with parquet-style patterns.
What I actually wanted to point out is that this is not a random stagger, but “something else.” Even a random stagger follows certain rules.
