hampshire3 May 2019 06:37Network installation depends on location, requirements, and inclination. Bandwidth (or speed) is usually needed for many data-intensive parallel applications. We don’t have that and haven’t planned for it.
Our kids are constantly online, gaming and streaming a lot. Instead of installing numerous LAN outlets, they will have their own internet connection, as that is the bottleneck.
In the new house, we receive three weak Wi-Fi signals from neighbors. Interference like in dense housing estates is not expected. For most of our single users, everything works perfectly well over Wi-Fi.
We have consciously decided against “smart” applications because we are currently experiencing how even simple dimmer switches can become a challenge for people gradually losing their memory due to dementia. We want to understand our environment and maintain basic functions, such as turning on the lights, for as long as possible. Try doing that in old age with a KNX switch, where six of them are grouped together in a small space.

What’s going on with your upload? Half of it is missing. Or do you only have a 20 Mbps upload speed? If that’s enough... It’s like winter tires rated up to 210 km/h (130 mph) for people whose cars can go faster but never actually should in practice.

It's like winter tires rated for up to 210 km/h (130 mph) for people whose car can go faster but actually never should in practice. He mentioned a 40 Mbps upload speed. That's why the question. 20 Mbps is enough for most people.Sorry that you are currently experiencing the effects of dementia in a loved one. I went through it with my grandfather. I wish you a lot of strength.
If you have 6 KNX switches in a small space, that doesn’t really qualify as smart. Lighting should be controlled based on presence, indoor and outdoor brightness, time of day, and so on. As a “safety” backup, you could still add a regular switch.
When dementia progresses significantly, switches don’t help anymore. On the contrary, smart technology can actually be an advantage in this situation.
Still, I understand if someone decides against KNX, regardless of the financial aspect. The added value for medium-sized properties is questionable if only basic functions are needed.
If you are planning the house with aging in mind, are all doorways wheelchair-accessible? Do you have an elevator, etc.?
When gaming, the crucial factor is latency. Wi-Fi always has higher latency than wired LAN. It also depends on your internet connection.
However, having extra internet ports usually doesn’t make much sense—especially if you ultimately rely on Wi-Fi. Depending on the provider, you share the available bandwidth anyway.

If you are considering aging in place, is everything wheelchair accessible, including elevator, etc.? To some extent, yes.

But having extra internet connections doesn’t really make sense, especially if it’s just Wi-Fi. Depending on the provider, you still share the bandwidth. For gaming, the guys definitely use LAN.
Two connections, because we have a maximum of 50 Mbit/s available and I don’t want to "suffer" when they game, listen to music, stream, or download games at the same time... They should manage with their own connection, and I can have peace.
Our bandwidth is limited not due to oversubscription, but because of cable attenuation. From the distribution box, there is enough bandwidth so that I’m not affected by oversubscription with the provider.
