Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

I'm also a fan of having many power outlets and believe that when building new, it's better to go big rather than stingy.
But 50 outlets in and around the garage? That proverb about using a sledgehammer to crack a nut hardly does it justice. That practically qualifies as a nuclear first strike...

Could you briefly explain why you need so many?

Well, I don’t just have the garage but, as my father nicely puts it, a "man cave" as well.

This room will be a motorcycle workshop. I need electricity for the air compressor, the garden pump, my sewage system controller, the server cabinet, and so on. Quite a few things add up.

People in this forum usually say to have one outlet too many in the house. Since my garage measures 10.5 × 7 m (34.4 × 23 ft), I don’t find it unreasonable to distribute 40-50 outlets there.

And maybe my wife will kick me out eventually, so I’ll have to live over there.

Today, I spent the entire day operating a wheel loader, spreading the huge pile of excavated soil across the property while also pulling out old concrete fence posts.

It's perfectly fine that you have so many power outlets. This is also understandable with a different usage.

Our garage is more than twice as large, and we have maybe 10 outlets plus 2x heavy-duty power connections (32 amps).

But a server cabinet in the garage? Is that inside the building's thermal envelope? What about moisture and similar issues? How many LAN outlets do you have then?

The server cabinet I’m placing in the garage is my second one; it originally belonged to my father. The main cabinet will go into the utility room. Currently, we have 20 LAN outlets in the house, with at least one double LAN outlet in every room.

This one goes inside the house.

Yes, I know it’s completely oversized, but it was free.

A similar one will go into the garage.

You have 20 Ethernet outlets and two 48-unit server racks???

Are you planning to set up a server farm? A single 48-port switch should be enough for that. On top of that, you could add a separate router and modem, as well as a small NAS. You will never need more than 10 rack units (RU).

We have over 110 Ethernet outlets and use less (including 10 Gbit Ethernet...) than your two racks.

As far as I can tell from here, the rack is not suitable for damp environments.

Better seal it for the garage and line it with wood. Then you’ll have a humidor for cigars. That would fit nicely into a men’s retreat area.

As I said, if I hadn’t received it as a gift, I wouldn’t have gotten such a case myself.

The one for the garage will almost certainly be used for a different purpose.

But cigars won’t go in there. I’ll come up with something to put in it.
