Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

I’m a bit jealous of the view—after building on an infill plot, we’re naturally surrounded by neighbors. We would have preferred an open field as well. But here, you just have to be grateful if you find any land to build on at all.

So, our sauna is starting to take shape! At least the base for the partition wall to the bathroom is in place—though I haven’t had a chance to try lying down yet.

Infill plots also have their charm.
For example, the neighboring gardens are already mature.
Often, the lots are not rectangular (in our case, there are no 90° angles).

We would also like to include a sauna, but unfortunately, we don’t have the budget for it yet. However, it will come at some point.

May I ask how much the sauna will cost you, including installation into the sloping roof, etc.?
Am I correct in understanding that you will also have a window in the sauna?

The cost estimate was around €8,000. An advantage with a wooden house builder: they also handle that.

Yes, there is a window included in the sauna. We wanted it to be bright – originally, my dream was to have a double casement window in the sauna (a fixed one, not openable), but we decided against it. Now I look out from the bathtub at the starry sky and from the sauna into the greenery (there are many trees in front of the bathroom windows, and in summer it’s really green – in winter, we see the branches).

I have fibromyalgia and often experience severe joint pain, and warmth helps me (for some people, it’s the cold that helps) – that’s why I insisted on having a sauna.

Yesterday the civil engineers were here. We narrowly avoided a small disaster... I had pressured the plumbing company several times to stick to their promised dates (the manager had forgotten to order materials over Easter), since the civil engineers were scheduled to arrive on April 29 and before that, the screed had to be laid inside the house so the civil engineers could access the utility conduit. I reminded the plumbers about April 29 several times, and then yesterday the civil engineers told me they still needed the plumbing seals; otherwise, they would leave again. I had no idea about this, so I called them, and they said, “uh... yes, they’re on the way... they didn’t know about April 29.”

That was lucky... the civil engineers schedule appointments with a maximum lead time of six weeks. Heating the screed would have become a real issue...

Can anyone tell me what the orange cable on the upper/right PE pipe is? I didn’t want to disturb the guys during their lunch break out of curiosity... in the utility conduit at the planned fiber optic connection, there are an orange and a green cable sticking out respectively.

Gradually, I’m starting to get a clear final total, and it looks like about €20,000 (approximately €10,000 from financing and €10,000 saved last year) will remain. The final invoice from the shell builder has also arrived. Including the Schiedel chimney + fireplace, L-shaped blocks, and terrain modeling, the total is exactly €164,000 plus €4,200 for the landfill. The plasterer and plumber are still somewhat uncertain but could balance out.

We’ve also decided to cover the entire ground floor with wood-look tiles instead of mixing laminate flooring in the living area.
