Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

11ant, I appreciate your defense of the criticism, but when I read sentences like "Couldn’t you have planned the window differently?" directed at a user whose building is already completed, I just shake my head. With the same logic, I could have told my grandfather, who has long since passed away, back when he was alive, “Grandpa, if you hadn’t shouted hooray, you wouldn’t have gone to Russia, and Grandma and Dad wouldn’t have been bombed out...” But “could have,” 11ant, rhymes with “bicycle chain.” K.

That is exactly why I defended the criticism by pointing out that such comments may come too late for the original poster at that point—but still in time for the average six to eight times larger number of "invisible discussion followers."

(In cases like this, I usually write: "Dear readers, please do not try this at home!")

I find some of the criticism here somewhat exaggerated. There is nothing left to change regarding the conditions shown here. And the nitpickers will have to accept it when it says The color looks good to me.

@ Exhaust air
It is well known that warm air tends to rise rather than fall. Releasing it at the bottom doesn’t fail due to crossflows, but it requires some suction first or moves more slowly than if released at the top. So it could have been done more efficiently, but it’s not a major issue.

@ Triggering criticism
There are basically two kinds of forum users: invisible (aka silent readers) and visible (question askers, responders/commenters). Compared to silent readers, the question asker obviously has the disadvantage of being "visible," "specific," and "directly addressable," thus "exposed"—but also the advantage of being able to guide responses with their precise question, whereas silent readers must rely on the scraps from those questions that partly relate to their own issues. So, the drawback comes with an advantage that shouldn’t be overlooked. In other words, one should not overvalue the "aha, you did it wrong" criticism or let the helpful "here’s a detail you should reorder in time" feedback spoil the enjoyment.

The user is present enough here that it actually seems odd to omit the name.

And if you look closely: I always criticize the builders on a factual level. I am firmly critical of architects or professional planners who, to put it kindly, deliver work far below the quality their fees imply; and of software that tricks laypeople into thinking it can replace the architect but in reality is at best just a drafting assistant.

I am of the opinion that the "consumer" homeowner has a legitimate expectation that the architect is not only an architect in name on their brass plate but truly possesses significant construction planning competence compared to the client. A layperson may draw stairs without mentally visualizing head heights, but a professional taking symbolic coins for their work should never do that. When professionals uncritically replicate amateur mistakes, in my view, it should not be handled with kid gloves. And we unfortunately see cases here where "architects" ruin dream homes by, for example, arranging blackwater pipes within first-rate cubic drywall sculptures between the dining table and sofa.

I absolutely do not claim to have "no" positive examples here, only very few illustrated ones. The reason is quite simple: 1. I am much worse at drawing than writing; 2. I lack rights to images I might use; 3. I have a strong sense of propriety about using unlicensed images.

Moreover, I have always stood by my conviction that renting, despite all owner pride, is a considerably more flexible form of housing finance (and I even emphasize that the half kilometer between the front door and garage gate is not my property). So if anyone concludes from my posts that I am secretly hiding a Neuschwanstein pool house, that’s not my doing—they must have played that film in their own imagination.

Yeah, I meant you exactly... I just wanted to spare others from your name in that regard and avoid provoking further.

How many times have I read from you: *Nonsense architect, find someone else* with that supposed humor wrapped in stories... to me, that’s exaggerated or inappropriate criticism.

When newcomers post something like that, such a comment can be a real turn-off and cause users to stay away from this forum.

@Nordlys nailed it perfectly. Thanks!

Then it is contradictory to quote me in full again

I don’t wrap anything in stories, nor do I have any supposed humor.

It is a fact that if an architect clearly shows themselves to be sloppy or a poor listener to the client, they should not be dismissed only in design phase 5 or later, but the sooner, the better.

Newcomers rarely post such a comment — mainly because they usually lack the trained eye to recognize from plans how much effort the author put into them.

Besides, my posts are very quickly recognizable thanks to 1. a consistently used 2. yellow avatar and 3. an above-average amount of text with 4. few images. So anyone who on the one hand doesn’t like my style but on the other hand doesn’t want to put me on their ignore list is warned early that a 11ant comment will come and can easily skip it.
