Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

How high is the fitness room in the basement? Can you fit common cardio equipment (bike, elliptical, ...) in there without hitting your head?

I would say around 220-230cm (87-90 inches), but I don’t have the exact figure on hand. The rack shown in the picture is 208cm (82 inches).

No cardio equipment is planned, but there should be plenty of space for it.

Over the weekend, we were able to admire the completed attic. It was freezing up there at -7.5°C (18.5°F). But everything was nicely dry, no condensation. Only the ceiling between floors is insulated. Best regards, Steffi33.

Why use battens and counter battens instead of OSB and then plasterboard?

Two layers of battens were a misunderstanding. They would only have been needed to create the necessary recess depth for ceiling spots. However, those are only in the bathrooms, not in the bedrooms.

So, insulation between the collar beams, a single layer of battens, and then directly plasterboard will probably be the solution.

The ventilation unit is fully decoupled within its casing and will not be placed on the floor but either mounted on the gable wall or hung on a framework.

The hot water tank and boiler have already been installed in the attic. Meanwhile, we have started working on the sloped ceilings on the upper floor. The layers will be:

- 200 mm (8 inches) mineral wool
- Vapor barrier
- 80 mm (3 inches) composite panel made of insulation and wood fiber
- Plasterboard

So, about an additional 9 cm (3.5 inches) under the rafters. Then it can be directly finished with joint filler and paint.

@Steffi33

Is there still an air gap between the insulation and the OSB boards?

No, the OSB boards are placed on heavy timber, with insulation flush in between. Should I be concerned? The ceiling itself is a concrete filigree slab. Regards, Steffi33.

@sirhc: That’s quite a lot of insulation in the roof slopes! Is the plaster on the ring beam still damp?
