Cool, drone footage, I wanted to do something like that too... but there simply wasn’t enough time She has mentioned that several times already, even in this thread! And there is no chemical treatment inside, so the natural wood character remains.
However, I find the experiment quite daring. A basement like that should easily last 50 years, and no one knows what a wooden basement will look like after that time. The rest of the house will be built on top of it. I wouldn’t dare to do something like that.

The kitchen was installed today and we love it... Congratulations on the kitchen! I think it looks great, lots of space and beautiful fronts. I would have liked that too, but knowing my cleaning habits, I’m going with smooth fronts instead. The floor tiles are exactly my style. Wishing you happy cooking always!

I have a kitchen design that is exactly the opposite (at an age where Josephine could be my daughter), so it’s not a generational issue but a matter of taste, which luckily can vary.
Still, the kitchen looks cohesive, so very well done!
I’m sure I would find something old-fashioned in your design as well, maybe your need to match or the kitchen island or something. So everything is relative!
Exactly, the kitchen and house already fit well together, but for me personally, the overall concept would be a deal-breaker and a reason to leave. However, taste is subjective; everyone finds different things appealing, and that’s a good thing. It would be boring if everything were the same.
That said, I fully agree with Fummelbrett: I’ve even thought about virtually handing over a toothbrush so that all the delicate cassette panels and trim can be kept nicely clean *g*.
My principle is usually: form follows function. Therefore, only smooth kitchen fronts. And upper cabinets would always have to reach up to the ceiling for me (I know myself: dusting or wiping on top would always be skipped due to lack of time, but on the other hand, I find it disgusting what collects there). Otherwise, I prefer things to be kept reduced, simple, and if possible, timeless—so no modern gimmicks (or rustic ones either). In the hope that after 20 years, I can still look at everything without feeling eye strain. We certainly are influenced by current trends, but I hope not too much. (Take the floor, for example: we want natural oak; a few years ago, oak would have been a no-go, and beech was preferred... we’ll see if we still like the oak in 20 years.)
Again, about the wooden basement:
- We are fans of wood as a building material; a wooden basement was therefore a logical conclusion for us.
- We didn’t find any “standard” basement contractors who would give us a firm commitment.
- Yes, as a basement it’s experimental, but the construction method has been tested and proven over a longer period (there must be houses somewhere in Hamburg sealed with EPDM membranes; they have lasted over 35 years and have been exposed to wind and weather; such a membrane underground is much more protected).
- In 50 years, I’ll be 101 years old… if the basement lasts that long (and that’s how long the manufacturer’s EPDM membrane warranty lasts), that’s enough for me—and after me, the flood (we don’t have children).
