Hello everyone,

I am looking for a house number for our new build. Could you please share your house numbers or ideas here? Also, what else should I keep in mind?

My criteria:
- high quality
- easy to read

Thanks!

How about using corten steel as a material? It would probably look quite good with your brickwork.
I don’t think camouflage colors would be beneficial here.

We are probably aiming for a classic stainless steel house number. Whether with a light above or backlit, we will still decide.
We find the house number much more challenging...

A number in the front yard/on the fence/on a stone, or similar, could also be an alternative for you if you haven’t prepared cables inside the wall and are uncertain about what would be clearly visible on such a varied brick surface.

Where is it regulated how my house number must look? So far, there was none on the house itself, only on the garden gate. However, that’s not very practical since the gate faces away from the direction of traffic. Our house is too far from the street and is also planned to be surrounded by vegetation, so we can’t put something subtle there. I could imagine putting it on our garage instead...

Actually, every city or municipality usually has regulations regarding house numbers.

For example, it might state that if the house is x meters (y feet) away from the street, the house number should be placed on the fence or boundary wall, or something similar.

However, I believe it’s simply in everyone's best interest that the number is clearly visible, and no one will complain if it is mounted on the left side instead of the right, or something like that!

Yes, see @hausnrplus25 (perfect username): if you are assigned a number, it is specified in the official letter from the municipality. Since you are renovating and essentially acquired a house number with the property, that letter is not necessary.

Still, it is in YOUR best interest that emergency services like paramedics or firefighters can find you easily. Also, personal mail should not end up at the neighbor’s address.

There are general regulations in the building code and additional rules from the federal states or local municipalities. The main purpose is to ensure orientation and easy identification of the respective property or house. As @ypg mentioned, it is especially in one’s own interest to be found as quickly as possible in an emergency, which can be needed sooner than you think. The design is sometimes regulated or limited as well, but generally, no one really pays attention to it. Therefore, I would place the house number where it can be most easily seen from the street so it fulfills its important purpose: making the property easy to find. Whether that is on the garage wall, the gate to the property, or the house façade is secondary. In urgent cases, you can also display the house number in several places.
