Good evening everyone,

We are currently planning the exterior design of our house and would appreciate advice from those with building experience 🙂

How did you approach the color scheme for the outside? For example, the roof tile color, window frames, front door, garage door, and so on?

There is always the option to choose RAL colors... Has anyone done this, or how did you coordinate your colors?

(PS: Our house will be white, and the tiles/windows/front door, etc., will be in a dark gray/light black tone...)

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Kind regards

And for some, it is already a value in itself to go against the flow.
That’s how, for example, the hipster movement started, only to eventually turn into the opposite...

On the topic: We would have preferred a color other than traffic white (or similar). But with an estimated extra cost of 3,000–4,000 EUR (3,200–4,300 USD) we decided against it. Changing the windows afterward might still have been possible, but now I have settled on simply painting colored frames around the windows. Probably green-gray or something like that, which is still being discussed with my wife.
We originally wanted green roof tiles. Braas no longer produces them. The alternatives from Benders weren’t quite satisfactory, and my wife and child couldn’t agree on a color. The shape I preferred (double S) wasn’t available there at all.
So we ended up choosing Braas after all, specifically the Harzer Pfanne in slate gray (which is basically anthracite).
I’m curious to see how it will look finished.
We’re still deciding on the front door as well. I would personally go for white or light gray or something similar, but my wife currently wants old rose.

Our decisions were definitely cost-driven overall; otherwise, we probably would have ended up with a light pastel green facade and bright red (or something like that) windows.

The additional cost for a different color is astonishing. I might be underestimating the limitations imposed on homeowners by general contractors and property developers.

If you look carefully, you can also find very affordable solutions.

Often, it's simply a lack of creativity and courage.

In the end, it's about the overall impression.

This thread seems to be about the question: which gray (or another color) would I prefer?!

You really don’t have to make a big deal out of it: if you want gray, then just go for it—whether the roof tiles are exactly the same or have a slightly more yellowish tint instead of bluish, you usually can’t tell because of how light reflects on the different surfaces. And if that bothers someone, they’re just being a bit picky... it has nothing to do with courage or creativity 😉

With us, almost all colors for the house facade were available at no extra cost. What did cost extra were color accents called Smokey eyes by 11ant.

At another provider, the color palette was limited, even for options available at an additional charge.

I believe that even within the tight constraints set by some general contractors or their budgets, there are always ways to create a beautiful home for yourself. If the facade paint is simply too expensive, you need to come up with ideas beyond the costly prefab options offered by hardware stores. I also doubt the notion that you can only create something nice “with money.”

I often think of a house builder in Sweden who put up a sign in his front yard that said, “I don’t take part in your competition.” That’s something I try to remind myself of regularly!

I believe it’s not only in homebuilding that it’s difficult to discover your truly OWN preferences and style, rather than doing something just to keep up with others or outdo them.

Envy often arises because people have not dared to do something themselves. The “poor” may envy the money of the “rich,” while the “rich” envy the “simple and easy” life of the “poor.”

Even in a forum like this, unhealthy pressure can develop, which you can only resist with discipline and self-confidence. As a perceived amateur, you might end up doing everything just to avoid looking foolish later... only to realize afterward that you did look foolish because you tried to do everything (that was my own first experience with building).

I am surprised that despite the huge variety available today, some builders still mention specific tile or flooring products by name, as if there were only three types back in the day, when you had to choose Stragula in blue, gray, or green.

But this is not about anything nice or whatever. It is about how the color palette was put together.
