Hello dear community,
I hope you don’t mind if I ask some basic questions here – I am a complete beginner when it comes to house extensions or renovations. That’s why I signed up here, hoping to get some answers and tips for our project. Thank you in advance for all your responses!
About my/our concern:
We would like to create additional living space by adding an extra floor to our existing house. Here is a rough idea we have in mind (if such a thing is even feasible): The rarely used balcony would be enclosed and extended upwards. The current asymmetrical roof would then be made symmetrical on both sides and fitted with dormer windows to make the attic space usable. I’ve also attached two pictures to give a rough overview of what we’re thinking.
This is just a rough idea of what’s going on in our beginner’s minds.
My concrete question to the community:
Who should we contact with this “idea” to check if and what is feasible?
I know the information is quite limited. If more details are needed, I will do my best to gather and provide them!
Thanks again to everyone, and have a nice evening.

I would consult an architect, preferably someone who frequently works on renovations or refurbishments rather than solely new builds. An architect can definitely assist you. A general contractor might also be an option, although this could be a bit too specialized for most, since most general contractors focus on new construction.
It may also be necessary to maintain the twin-house character of the semi-detached house.

Hello and thank you very much for the responses...
The house has 2 full stories – on the first floor there are 4 fully functional, although rather small rooms, one of which has access to the balcony.
Do I get the building plan from the local municipality, or is that handled by the district?

Just because a house has two or even three levels doesn’t mean they qualify as full floors under building regulations. Here, it is clearly visible that the ground floor has a larger footprint than the upper floor. The asymmetrical roof and the use of the “bay window” as a balcony suggest that the design aims to maximize the single-story layout.
However, this does not rule out that two-story construction could be permitted and only one story was built.
Zoning plans are now listed online by many municipalities. Simply check under the building department section of the relevant website or inquire there by phone.
