ᐅ House entrance with a step but without a landing in front of the door

Hello everyone,

The initial work has now started on our plot, and there have been discussions about the elevations and the entrance.

Basically, there are two options for the entrance design: level with the ground or with step(s).

We have agreed that we want one step in front of the front door. Our general contractor suggested that we can use the 16 cm (6.3 inch) screed as the step into the house, so no additional steps or a porch are needed outside. However, I can’t imagine how that would look from the outside. Wouldn’t the front door then be kind of “hanging in the air”?!

On the side where the front door is located, a carport will be built later, which will also serve as a canopy, and there will be a passage to the garden. The contractor’s concern was that if a concrete step is poured in front of the door and a car is parked there, it won’t be easy to get a wheelbarrow or similar through to the garden.

That all makes sense, but what does it look like if there is no concrete step there? When I search on Google, I only find entrances either level with the ground or with traditional steps in front of the door.

Does anyone have a similar setup and could share a photo online?

Best regards,
S.

I would not recommend an "air step" (a height difference acting as a drop-off edge without an actual step). That would essentially be a solid form of negligent bodily injury.

A 16 cm (6 inches) height difference is almost ideal for exactly one step. Usually, steps are never made individually (because it’s easy to misjudge them inside and then trip), but for an entrance door, this is taken into account and works well. However, I would choose about twice the depth of a regular stair tread here, so approximately 50 cm (20 inches). If the entrance is not recessed but flush with the wall line, this practically means 50 cm (20 inches) less clearance for rims and sills when driving through.

*) For a stair step of this height, a depth of 31 cm (12 inches) is considered ideal; transferred to an entrance door step, I would consider 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24 inches) a good value.

Okay, then we will place a standard step block in front of the entrance door. That way, everything will be properly set and secure.
