My wife and I want to build a few holiday homes abroad. A few years ago, without much knowledge, we bought a piece of land near a salt lake (lakefront property). The soil there is salty, and according to a report (which we have not seen ourselves and know only by hearsay), construction is not possible because of the soil’s salt content. Adjacent plots (a bit further from the lake) have been or are already built on.
Should we now hire a surveyor or expert ourselves, or is it generally safe to build on this land? Are there special considerations when building on salty soil, especially regarding foundations, etc.?
For now, I’m trying not to worry too much. I come from the North Sea coast, where houses are built on polders that were reclaimed from the salty sea.
Best regards,
Mathias K.
