ᐅ Hot water circulation pump

Hello everyone,

Our heating engineer said he would usually install a circulation pump, but it could also be omitted. Operating costs would be about 30–50 € per year, and he estimated that it would need to be replaced every 6 years.
Of course, we don’t want to wait 30 seconds for the first warm water. He also mentioned that he can reduce the pipe diameter to somewhat lower the wait time.
Does anyone have experience with these pumps – from what pipe length or distance would you recommend installing one?

Another topic was the ventilation of the utility room, bathroom, and kitchen – he said it might be possible to install an air admittance valve (also known as a "mushroom valve" or similar) to avoid venting through the roof. Does anyone know about this? Does it cause any odors? I find that hard to imagine.

Thanks and best regards.

What the building expert wrote is not entirely correct – it only applies if the thermal insulation calculation was done without a circulation pump.

You can definitely include one – we easily achieved KfW 70 standard (even though we only used relatively thin insulation and a low-quality brick – we are now at KfW 56).

I wouldn’t build without such a pump – it is an essential comfort feature that costs very little and can be controlled over time.

We were calculated for KfW 55 but only need KfW 70 for the subsidy. I need to find out how many seconds one would have to wait. In our energy saving regulations, it was calculated without circulation, just checked again.

How do larger houses usually handle this? We have 13 m (43 feet) of pipe run in the bathroom upstairs and 7 m (23 feet) to the kitchen. I thought about whether something else could have been planned there — but it would have been difficult with the bedroom/master bathroom on the ground floor.

Yes, they plan that from the very beginning.

In your case, the construction expert’s assessment is correct—or the calculations will have to be redone.

The calculations will be redone anyway, since the heating and related systems were only provisionally included. So, do they plan to use a circulation pump from the start?

Jo

From the start, our planning matched the way it is now being built – that should be possible. It also makes sense and does not affect costs.

Of course, there are always some changes, but something so fundamental?

However, I don’t see any impossibility in implementation on your part...

The planner seems to have overlooked that... at least this is the first time we have been asked about it.
Will this be known for the next house construction?
Does anyone have experience with the mushroom vent for ventilation?
