Hello everyone,

Our heating engineer said he would usually install a circulation pump, but it could also be omitted. Operating costs would be about 30–50 € per year, and he estimated that it would need to be replaced every 6 years.
Of course, we don’t want to wait 30 seconds for the first warm water. He also mentioned that he can reduce the pipe diameter to somewhat lower the wait time.
Does anyone have experience with these pumps – from what pipe length or distance would you recommend installing one?

Another topic was the ventilation of the utility room, bathroom, and kitchen – he said it might be possible to install an air admittance valve (also known as a "mushroom valve" or similar) to avoid venting through the roof. Does anyone know about this? Does it cause any odors? I find that hard to imagine.

Thanks and best regards.

If I remember correctly, you want to build a KFW 70 energy-efficient house; doesn’t your heating engineer know that? An energy-efficient house and a circulation pipe are a no-go.

Regarding circulation, I can tell you that we wouldn’t want to be without it anymore. However, the pump does not run continuously. We have motion sensors in the bathrooms that activate it (first for the toilet, then immediately warm water for the hands or the shower). In the kitchen, we can operate the pump with a switch. Since the pipe run is very short, though, the switch turned out to be unnecessary.

Even KFW55... but why is that considered a no-go? Because the water in the pipes always cools down and the heating system has to keep reheating?

Yes, because it conflicts with the requirements of the Energy Saving Ordinance and, if installed, could jeopardize your approved subsidies. Shortly before the house handover, the KFW 55 status must be confirmed again based on the delivery notes for the installed materials. No sensible inspector would approve that.

Phew – thanks for the tip.
Just got told in the pink forum that 30 € operating costs for the circulation pump are a major exaggeration (we still won’t do it though – see Bauexperte’s comment).
For the mushroom valve used for ventilation, it was said that it wouldn’t cause odors but would make noises.
Alternatively, ventilation could be routed through the nursery (not a big deal – you’d have to build in a duct shaft or something) – but if we can avoid that, why not.
