ᐅ Hip roof – ideal pitch?

Hello!

It looks like we are building a house with a hip roof. There are various pitch angles that such a roof can have.

We prefer a shallower pitch, like the one on the pink house directly opposite. The more common option seems to be the steeper pitch shown on the house to the left.

The architect already mentioned that the shallower pitch is the more expensive option. Are there any other advantages or disadvantages to consider when choosing between these, aside from possible building permit or planning permission issues?

I posted a photo of our house with a 28/30-degree hipped roof in the house photo thread on page 107, post #638. You can see the 30-degree hipped roof from both the front and back, and the photo was taken from about 20 meters (65 feet) away. When you look at the plans, the roof appears much steeper because you don’t view it from street level. A 22-degree roof can only be seen clearly from a greater distance from the house.

Best regards,
Sabine

That’s right. For a two-story house, you won’t see the roof when standing directly in front of the house.
And the distance changes the perspective...

22 or 30 degrees?! Look at the two houses and you’ll know which one you prefer.

I would have tried 25° now. 28° would of course also be an option.

With a roof pitch under 25°, you won’t be able to see the ridge from the street..

were meant to say: from about 25° pitch (I can’t give an exact figure since it depends on how level your street is and the viewing distances possible) you will only start to see from below with a hip roof that the house actually has a sloped roof. So you don’t need to worry that if you give your wife her full 30° roof pitch, the roof would actually look too steep for you in real life just because it appears so on the plan. At 30° roof pitch, usable space for storage is available even without knee walls, so the garage might be able to be a bit smaller.

28/30° means: the house is square, and the front/rear roof slopes are 28°, while the sides are two degrees steeper, making it 30°, in order to create a pseudo ridge line for planning permission purposes?
