Hello!
It looks like we are building a house with a hip roof. There are various pitch angles that such a roof can have.
We prefer a shallower pitch, like the one on the pink house directly opposite. The more common option seems to be the steeper pitch shown on the house to the left.
The architect already mentioned that the shallower pitch is the more expensive option. Are there any other advantages or disadvantages to consider when choosing between these, aside from possible building permit or planning permission issues?

The architect already said that the option with the shallower angle is the more expensive one. That’s not generally true; the construction details also play a role.
This is purely about a sloped roof without the need for attic space. Just the maintenance hatch alone creates a bigger complication and a larger potential leak point than what you would expect with a flat roof. But for some, their misfortune is also their paradise.

We don’t have a hip roof but a gable roof over our bungalow, yet we put a lot of thought into the roof pitch and created many sketches. The main reason was the appearance. We felt the best result was at 25 degrees. In the final planning, we even went up to 26 degrees. This gave us a few centimeters (inches) more space under the ridge in the attic. We still think it’s perfect!
My impression: The roof on the pink house seems too shallow for a two-story townhouse. Somehow the proportions don’t look right. I prefer the roof on the brown townhouse. Best regards, Steffi.

R.Hotzenplotz20 Aug 2017 21:41Steffi, can you estimate the approximate pitch angle of the two roofs I posted? That would help me understand it better.
