Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my Ikea Kallax shelf unit: the hinge mounting on the door has completely torn out, so the door no longer holds properly. It concerns the plastic tabs that engage inside the unit and to which the hinges are attached. The door is now hanging loosely and barely closes.

Since I don’t want to replace the entire unit, I am wondering what the best way is to repair this damage.

Are there practical methods to re-secure the hinge mounting firmly without having to disassemble the whole shelf?

It is important to me that the repair is reasonably durable, as the door is used daily.

I appreciate any tips and experiences regarding hinge mounting on Kallax doors or, more generally, on torn-out hinges in furniture.

Thank you in advance!

Hello Sefaus,

First of all, this is a common issue with Kallax doors because the hinge mounting points are made of thin plastic, which can easily tear out if subjected to frequent or excessive force.

A proven repair method is to first fill the torn-out holes with suitable wood glue and wooden dowels or small wooden pegs. To do this, carefully drill out the damaged areas, insert the dowels with glue, and let everything dry thoroughly.

After that, you can drill new holes for the hinges—it's important that these are slightly offset from the original holes to ensure better grip. Alternatively, special furniture repair kits for plastic parts or small metal brackets can be installed inside to improve stability.

If you use screws, please use self-tapping screws with very fine threads, so the wood or material is not damaged again.

If you like, I can give you more detailed advice on tools and materials. Don’t worry, with some patience you can definitely manage the repair :-)

This is the technically correct approach. Additionally, it should be noted that the strength at the plastic tab is limited, so bonding the damaged area with epoxy resin or a plastic adhesive before inserting the dowels increases the mechanical stability.

Exactly, to make use of the material’s recovery ability, an offset of at least 3–5 mm (0.12–0.2 inches) is recommended. Using wooden dowels ensures a permanently stable connection.

Procedure:
1. Remove the old hinge leaf and take off the door.
2. Clean the damaged area and lightly sand it.
3. Apply epoxy resin or a strong all-purpose adhesive.
4. Insert wood glue and properly fitting dowels.
5. Allow everything to cure sufficiently (at least 24 hours).
6. Mark and drill new holes.
7. Attach the hinge.

This method is a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to purchasing new parts or replacements.

In special cases or with more severe damage, replacing the entire door might also be advisable.

Exactly.

If you need a quick fix: replace the hinge with small metal brackets and secure them inside the shelf. It doesn’t hold as well but works as a temporary solution.

Otherwise, repair as described.
