Hello everyone,

I have a recurring problem with my KALLAX shelf from IKEA, which I have been using quite intensively for some time now. Specifically, the plastic of the door hinges keeps breaking, even though I handle the doors normally and carefully. This makes the construction feel somewhat unstable, and I’m wondering whether this is a one-off material defect in my unit or if it is a common weak point in this piece of furniture.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Or do you know if IKEA has issued any recalls or repair instructions regarding this?

I would also appreciate any tips on how to reinforce or replace the hinge if this is indeed a general weakness.

Thanks in advance!

Oh no, that’s really frustrating! I’ve heard this from others as well – it seems some KALLAX models suffer from exactly this issue.

Often, it helps not to use just the original hinges but to switch to more durable metal hinges. It takes a bit of effort, but the investment is worth it because it provides a long-term solution!

Don’t give up, it will work! 🙂

Regarding the issue with frequent breakage of the plastic parts on the KALLAX hinge elements:

In general, the hinges on KALLAX are designed for light weight and moderate use. Therefore, the plastic components tend to be more prone to breaking under heavy stress.

An important factor here is the material quality of the plastic used: it is brittle and tends to develop micro-cracks from repeated stress (opening/closing), which then expand and lead to breakage.

To my knowledge, IKEA currently does not offer any specific recalls or replacement programs for these hinges. However, if it is a common product problem, customers might receive support through customer service.

Alternatively, I would recommend replacing these hinges with metal or robust stainless steel hinges to extend the lifespan. This is a proven method for many affordable furniture items where plastic parts are considered weak points.

For installation, new holes may need to be drilled or hinges custom-fitted.

Still, the question remains how heavy the daily use was. If the usage was normal, this rather points to a limitation in the material quality.

If further information is needed, I am happy to help.

So far, I am not aware of any official recalls or repair guidelines from IKEA for the hinges on the KALLAX. They are somewhat delicate but generally not designed to fail this frequently.

That’s true. Often, misalignment of the door or excessive leverage caused by pushing too hard on the hinge leads to breakage.

I always recommend following the assembly instructions carefully and opening and closing the door gently whenever possible.

Also, you can buy replacement hinges from IKEA if a full metal upgrade is not an option for you.

If you are handy, there are tutorials online showing how to retrofit more durable metal solutions.

Finally: don’t get discouraged—these issues are unfortunately common with budget furniture. With some patience, you’ll find a suitable solution! 🙂
