Hello everyone,

We are currently planning the construction of our terrace. It should eventually look similar to the terrace in the photo.

Our exit door to the terrace is about 80cm (31.5 inches) above ground level.
We want to build an elevated terrace to avoid having a step down from the house onto the terrace.
Around the outside, we plan to build a natural stone wall with a small flower bed in between.

My current idea for the implementation is as follows:
1. Strip foundation 80cm (31.5 inches) deep along the outer edge of the paved area (slight curve)
2. Then set formwork blocks (30cm (12 inches) wide) up to 80cm (31.5 inches) high as an edge strip for the paving
I would notch the formwork blocks on the inside to achieve the curve
3. Fill the formwork blocks with concrete
4. Fill and compact the interior space with gravel and crushed stone
5. Pave the surface with paving stones or slabs up to the top edge of the formwork blocks
6. Build the natural stone wall around the outside. Under the wall, I would add a 20cm (8 inches) layer of mortar
7. Then fill the area between the formwork blocks and the wall with gravel and soil

What do you think about this plan so far?
How would you approach the project?

I built ours following a similar principle to yours, but with a square shape.
Paved terrace with dining table and chairs next to a raised planter made of concrete blocks.

Looks great…

Where did you position the foundation? At the outer edge of the terrace?

How did you cover the formwork blocks?

will continue to settle,

Hello Nice-Nofred

If it is properly compacted, there will be no settlement.

We first built the wall, then backfilled and compacted the ground.

Modern terrace at white house with stone flower beds, outdoor seating area, and green lawn.

Construction site next to modern house; excavator digging soil, stone wall construction being prepared.

New construction site: gravel base, partially built stone wall, black pipes, construction machinery in the background.

Paved granite stairs with stone walls on the sides; pipes protruding from openings, construction site.

Did you fill the wall from behind with concrete, or did you simply put in gravel and compact it?

The wall next to the planting strips is basically freestanding. If the stones didn’t fit at all, some mortar was applied underneath. It was then backfilled with soil from behind.

The first course is also laid thinly in mortar.
