ᐅ Hiding Garbage Bins – What Are the Options?

Hello everyone,

Our house is almost ready to move into, so now we’re planning the garden. I’ve been looking for a way to hide the trash bins for a while, as I don’t find them very attractive standing out in the driveway. We have a 240-liter (63 gallons) organic waste bin, a 240-liter (63 gallons) paper recycling bin, a 120-liter (32 gallons) general waste bin, and also the yellow recycling bag. I have searched a lot online for bin storage boxes, but nothing has really impressed me so far. Especially since most options cost well over 1000 euros. Maybe I’m wrong, but at the moment, I think there must be something more affordable?

Ideally, we’d like a solution that can be integrated into the garden fence or wall. Unfortunately, the driveway isn’t flat but slopes slightly uphill. It’s really only a small incline, but it might already rule out cabinet-style solutions. I read in one article that the unit needs to be placed on level ground.

I’m still waiting to see if the landscape gardener has any ideas. Otherwise, I’ve considered putting up a bike shed in the front yard that could also fit the trash bins. But that would probably require a building permit / planning permission due to its size…

My biggest dream is also a parcel box integrated into the trash bin enclosure.

Long story short: How have you solved this?

I definitely wouldn't want to wait until the system is fully extended; that would mean I’d take out the trash less often *yuck*

Unfortunately, I haven’t found anything nice for the bins yet. We have two large and two small ones... and 4-bin units are really outrageously expensive.

The ones with integrated parcel lockers are great (even though we don’t have space for one) but they’re also “unaffordable.”

I’m really surprised there isn’t more variety in the more affordable range. After all, every house has garbage bins. I found a nice bike shed on a DIY website that’s a bit larger and can also fit garbage bins, and we could easily attach it to the garage. Does anyone know how to obtain a building permit / planning permission for DIY projects? Since it’s visible from the street, unauthorized construction is definitely not an option in this case...

Hello @Pinky0301,

how did you finally resolve this question?
I would appreciate any relevant experience you could share 🙂

Maybe this would also lead to producing less trash if you have to take it out less often? 🙂
If the remote control has a suitable range, I would operate it while still inside the house. By the time you get outside to the bins, hopefully, they will be fully raised 🙂

I always expect a trash bin to be ready for immediate use without delay.

Me too. That’s why most trash bin enclosures are not an option for me, because you always have to open a small door or an extra lid first. That would annoy me.
Also, we got a fourth bin last year, so most enclosures are out of the question anyway.

A fun alternative to make a trash bin look more attractive without enclosing it is to decorate it with stickers.
Just try a Google image search for ideas.
