Hello. I want to hang a mirror from the ceiling using chains. The mirror weighs about 20-30 kg (44-66 lbs). I purchased two heavy-duty anchors for this purpose.

I drilled an 8mm (0.3 inch) hole overhead into the ceiling. The concrete is quite porous, so it drilled like butter. I then bought a composite injection resin, which I injected into the hole. After that, I inserted the anchor and hammered it in firmly. Here came the first problem. The nut was almost completely pushed into the plaster layer due to the pressure. I don’t know if the anchor expanded properly; it is definitely free to rotate, but it holds the mirror on its own.

I didn’t want to leave it like that because I’m afraid the whole thing might eventually come loose from the ceiling, so I repeated the process with a second anchor. The plaster issue occurred again... I placed a second nut between the wall and the first nut so the anchor would have a contact surface, and I could still maintain the required depth of more than 45mm (1.8 inches). The nut fully disappeared into the plaster, and hammering only caused more plaster to crumble. However, this didn’t help, and I could easily pull the anchor out of the wall with some force. It just didn’t expand.

I definitely want a second hook on the ceiling so the mirror is not held by only one screw. Why didn’t this work? And what can I do now?

Thanks and best regards

Hello,

please make sure to get professional help. If a 30 kg (66 lbs) heavy mirror falls from the ceiling onto your head, you might not survive the impact!!!!

For heavy-duty anchors, it is also important that they are approved for use in the tensile zone of concrete. However, if you describe the concrete as drilling "like butter," then it was not concrete (possibly plaster) or at least not proper concrete.
